In you estimation, who is the best actor or actress? Not favorite, not best looking, but the best at ACTING?
One answer per person please.
My own favorite would probably be George C. Scott.

Tom Hanks...hands down.
All around entertainer?
Will Smith... try to find someone else who has had:
A #1 Television show
3 #1 Movies
2 #1 Albums
5 #1 Singles
and is really a nice guy to boot.
He's a great role model for kids.

Sally Field is one of the most under-rated actresses around. That woman is amazing.

Kevin Spacey in the usual suspects was one of the best I've seen in years. I rent every movie he's in. Also Tom Hanks and most Robin Williams movies.

Mel Gibson - (especially loved him in The Patriot and in Ransom).
While we can only pick one, I agree with a lot of the choices already posted.

I could never pick just one.
After watching the performances of Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn in "The Lion in Winter" how could you not say they are the best at their craft?
Or, when watching John Malkovitch and Glenn Close in "Dangerous Liasons" that
they are the best at their craft?
Or, Denzel Washington in "Glory"?
I could go on and on.
See my dilemma?

Living/working
Robert Duvall (incredible range)
Merly Streep (incredible range)
All time.
John Wayne
Several directors, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Otto Preminger, all said the same thing of John Wayne, he was the most graceful big man they had ever seen. Watch him, his walk, his manners, even in lighting a cigarette his motions are always graceful.
