Hubby and I are going away for a few days. The place we go doesn't have TV or a VCR. Normally we don't miss that at all, but this time we're staying longer than normal. I have a DVD player in my portable computer, and we may take a movie along.
We'd like something light/romantic (not trashy).
What are your favorite romantic movies and why?

In the Romantic-Comedy vein I highly recommend:
My Man Godfrey (William Powell/Carole Lombard version!) -- the best "screwball" comedy ever.
That Touch of Mink (Cary Grant/Doris Day)
Sleepless in Seattle
Sabrina (Humphrey Bogart/Audrey Hepburn) --avoid the lousy remake!
Just Plain Great Romances:
Love in the Afternoon (Gary Cooper/Audrey Hepburn)
An Affair to Remember (Grant/Kerr version) - avoid Beatty remake like the plague; original version w/ Charles Boyer (Love Affair) is OK
Jane Eyre - just about any version, this is a great romantic tale. Though I'm not a big fan of the Orson Welles version.
More later--gotta run for work, darn it!!!

HiMeya My hands down favorite romantic comedy of all time is White Palace with James Spader and Susan Sarandon.
Spader plays a gorgeous young widowed professional who is totally uptight, depressed and lonely. Sarandon is a cocky, outspoken waitress who shows him how to overcome his hang ups and enjoy life.
The lovemaking scenes between them are just OMG unbelievably hot..... Well, just be sure you've got a partner handy when you watch this one.
Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Your hubby would likely enjoy Braveheart, a romance of sorts.

Well, since this is leaning toward the classic oldies, One of my favorites is "Charade" with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It's a nice lighthearted romantic comedy with (hopefully) enough spy stuff and action so guys won't fall asleep.

In the last 20 years my vote has to go to "The Piano" a haunting movie. The story, acting, cinematography and a BEAUTIFUL score made it an instant classic with me. Jane Campion wrote and directed it, not a lot of women filmmakers in her league.

You have got to see this movie. It's called Overboard, with Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn. This movie restored my faith in love. You will laugh and you will cry. Not from sadness, but just knowing that two people can love each other that much. It is my all time favorite.

Sideslam: it had the opposite effect on me What's romantic about taking an amnesiac woman (who in her right minds can't stand you), lying to her, and making her essentially the slave of you and your bratty kids?

Bunnicula,
We all have our own opinons on what makes a good romantic movie. This movie just happens to be one of my favorites. Since you did see the movie than you know how it turns out. She (Goldie) devolps love for him (Kurt) and the bratty kids as the movie evolves.
