.......Please tell me how to resolve this problem(I consider it a problem).
I use a dial-up connection..normally I connect at 46,666--the past few days I can't connect any better than 41,333(and today all I get is 38,666 or less).
Why is it suddenly so slow????? and how can I fix it???????????

Sign up for Cable Internet connection.

We suffered the same fate as you are: your telephone company is likely splitting the bandwidth on their telephone lines like every other telephone company is in the country. Soon, the best that you'll be able to get is 28,800 or less.

But, even if this isn't the case, your first step is to contact your telephone company and have an engineer go check your lines for difficulties.

My connection is anywhere from 41k to 48k. It varies day to day (or connection to connection), but I don't know why.

zkatt...your connection speed has everythng to do with your phone line. If it was your modem, it would either work or not work, so it's not your modem.

If you keep logging on at a lower speed and it keeps getting worse, I'd call the phone company (spring can do weird things to phone lines).

If your speed fluctuates, it's just the phone line and you'll have to live with it.

Hope that helps some!

We pay $39.95 a month for cable. We were paying $23 for an extra phone line, and the $18 per month for our dial up ISP, so cable works out a tad cheaper. Even if it were $50 it would be worth it.

Phone line connections can vary greatly, especially on old lines. Around here, every time it rains people have trouble with their phones etc.

You could try changing the cable going from the wall to the computer. Can you hear static on the line when using the phone? Any kind of line noise is going to mess with your connection.

ZKATT,

I don't know what your current ISP is charging you for service, but DSL is coming down in price as of late. Locally, I can get DSL for $40/month. This may seem high, but by eliminating the current ISP and doing away with a dedicated modem line, it pays for itself.

No static on the phone line.
I'll look into the cable and see if it has come down any but as of a month ago it was still $50(unless you get your cable tv and phone lines through them).

zkatt: Meya had a good idea about the telephone line from the wall to your modem. Most folks get tired of the mess and tangle of wires behind their computer and tend to bundle the cords together to neaten things up. The thing is, is that they bundle power cords with data lines. When you put a telephone cord in parallel with a power cord, the AC current will "jump" over onto the telephone line. You won't hear it, it'll just cause your modem speed to go downwards. You can't hear the problem, just experience a slow-down. My advice is to seperate your telephone line from all other wires, making sure that it does not travel in parallel with ANYTHING.

BTW: if you ar still using some silly ISP like AOL, if you go with DSL or Cable, you can drop your AOL or MSN or other ISP bill down. Seems that users pay a pretty penny each month for dial-up service and the service itself is fairly cheap. Here's how ours went:

Before Cable:
AOL = $21.95/month
Extra Telephone line = $26.80/month
-----------------------------------
Total = $48.75/month

Cable ISP = $39.95/month
One Extra Computer = $5.00/month
AOL without Dialup Service = $9.99/month
----------------------------------------
Total = $54.94/month

It took a while, but I finally convinced my S.O. to drop the AOL account and it hasn't been missed a single second. That makes it $44.95 a month here -- less than we were paying for before. The extra pluses: Once your pc is booted up, you're already online - just open your browser to go search and view at high-speeds. And you never get kicked offline, so oyu can keep your browser open and running 24 hours a day and never get disconnected by the ISP. To me, that's worth the saving s in cash.

try setting your modem string to S38=0. Look under dial up networking (MS IE 5).
Modem properties, then connections, then advanced. This usually grabs and keeps the highest possible speed.
(that is what I'm told anyway). I have been using this setting for quite a while now and have seen a marked increase in my connection speed.

Good luck
