I just bought a Panasonic Palmcam 4090 and I just wanted to tell everyone that it is just as good as the Mavica if not better. You can buy them on ebay for 300.00 dollars (they usally sell on amazon and at stores for 600.00 dollars) It has a 3 times optical zoom but if you have to you can make it 5. It uses floppy discs and it comes with something call a "Super Disk" you can store up to 1,500 photos on a "Super Disk". You can also create video clips. This Camera is one good camera! Here is a pic of this camera

Thanks for the info, Lou. It's a day late for me, though... my new Mavica arrived this morning.

Lou Not sure how you can compare to a Mavica since you have previously stated you know nothing about cams, BUT, for an additional $35 you could have had...used Sony Mavica FD75 digital camera. It will be brand new in a never opened boxed, still factory sealed. 10x optical zoom, 3.5 floppy disk, 2.5 LCD color monitor, immediate view after taking picture, 1640x480 VGA maximum

If you have a need to record 1,500 photos at a time, then have a ball..I have enough on my hands with the 25 or so that I get on a disc to keep me busy for a couple of hours...

I really wanted to see one of these and went to their web site and used the list there to find 3 stores near me that stocked these.
The Staples and Walmart I went to had never sold these and had no idea why they would be on the list.
The CompUSA store I went to had one but it was mounted on a spring reel cable and had an aluminum cyclinder on the bottom to hold it in the dispaly board. With the mount weighing as much as the camera and the cable pulling on it there was no way to tell what the thing felt like. Also it was not powered up. I asked a worker if they had a battery to power it up so I could check it out. He said their profit was so low on them they could not spend that much time with them so I could buy it or not but the display was all that the store could do to help me.
The camera itself looks like fine but they sure need a sales organization.

I have a Mavica 73, no complaints at all & I bought it because of all the recommendations on this board. Lou's camera sounds like a nice buy. What is the big difference between the two & what is wrong with a refurbished?
I have one question about my Mavica though.
I have trouble getting a white background to stay white. With or without the flash, indoor or outdoor. Maybe I don't know the right setting. Can anyone advise? My backgrounds actually come oud brown & an ugly shade too.

Big mistake Lou it's not better, it's just OK. Look how much the price dropped & how fast, doesn't that tell you something.
You really would have done much better to put your money into a Mavica. Next buy, heed the advice of the experts on this message board & you won't go wrong. Good luck though, hope it works out for you.

Last time I checked the reviews, the Panasonics got really good comments. Good luck and have fun! We have a Super Disk drive on our main system. They come in handy, but didn't catch on in wide spread use unfortunately. For a camera, especially on a trip, they would be great.

Don't mind the comments by the Mavica Mavins. They like to make fun of anyone who uses a different brand, sort of like Mac users.

Personally, I like the cameras that use Compact Flash cards, but it's a preference thing.

spelling...

So for $35 less you got a "refurbished" cam rather than a new one....less zoom capability, which can be VERY important for auction work, and you STILL think you got a "Better" camera...good luck Lou...enjoy cropping 1500 pics at one time

ubiedaman, please read my post. I said That the camera sells $580.00 on amazon.com. And I got it for $300.00 dollars. And your saying "For 35 dollars less then the mavica I got a camera with less zoom." You can't buy a Panasonic Palmcam NEW for that price. And who cares about zoom? I am not going to take a picture of a item 15 feet away. Would you? If you do great. But thats kind of stupid!

Lou...the pics aren't ALWAYS taken from a distance with a zoom..I have often used max (10x) zoom to get close up detail on small items..and of COURSE you can't buy a new one for the price of a refurbished..that would be stupid.
