My ISP has decided that since my family is on the computer for too many hours a day we should have to pay triple the amount we were paying. Even though when we signed up they said it was to have unlimited use.

Does anyone know of a dial up ISP that really lets you have unlimited use and doesn't cost and arm and a leg? Some days we have the puter on for twelve hours or so. I do Ebay and other family members do interactive college classes online so it has to be dependable as well.

Ideas? Anyone? Please.

Might get flamed for this, but I like my AOL.

I've also been happy with my AOL service. I'm not usually on a lot, but there have been times when I've accidentally left it on overnight and they haven't booted me yet!

How much is AOL now. They used to be one of the highest priced ISPs. I have also heard that they nearly take over your computer with thier program. True or not? They let you stay on as long as you like? That would be nice.

What about AT&T? Earthlink? There used to be a site called TheList where you could look up your area code and see what ISP's were in your area.

I would stay away from AOL except as a last resort, or if you travel and need to connect in many different areas.

Found it: http://www.thelist.com/

I think Im paying 24.95 a month. And yes, they take over your pc, lol. But, they give me what I want, what I look for when surfing, so I dont really care. All I know is that it works for me and Im happy with it.

I'm pretty sure my AOL service is $21.95/month, unless they raised it and I didn't notice, which is possible.

It's doesn't take over my computer, except for the occasional pesky "update" every once in a while after I sign off.

I also don't get flooded with spam like I've heard some others complain about. I'm a happy customer.

I'll second AOL from a true unlimited time
frame we have the computer on approximately
16 hours a day...and because I am a Senior with AARP I get a discounted rate of $19.25
(not positive about the change)

If you have access to cable, when your computer is on, you are online. Unlimited use and fast. Costs anywhere from $40 to $50 depending where you are, but there is no need for a second phone line. I know cable is not available everywhere, but if it is, it's certainly worth it.

Can't afford cable yet and don't have a second phone line . I thought with cable you still had to have a seperate ISP? Am I wrong about that? Is the total cost per month in the $30 - $40 range? Of course you do have to buy a modem too don't you? Questions,Questions.

rawbunzel...

I have AT&T Roadrunner cable...they're my ISP...the modem came free with the service (it belongs to them)...costs $39 a month. That price is because we already have basic cable for our TV. If we didn't, it would cost more, but I don't remember how much.

We have cable access through Time Warner's Road Runner. That is the ISP, and the modem and the NIC card were installed as part of the sign up fee. I don't remember now what the initial cost was, I think we paid $40 and received 3 months at half price ($20). We pay $39.95 per month.

Before cable we were paying $23 per month for the second phone line, and $18 per month for the ISP, so with cable we are just about the same.

We have 6 people using the computers here, so we more than get our money's worth out of the cost. There is no way I could use a phone line dial up without a second phone line. Someone is always on the phone, with 4 kids and 2 adults. The kids are 21, 19, 16, and 14.

Thanks Toke, I do have ATT Cable as well. Might have to look into that. It is still a bit more than I would like to pay at this time [all the utilities are going up up up!]
but it would free up the phone.

Edited to ad thanks to Meya too!

Just to add...we don't use cable tv either. Now if you sign up for Road Runner and don't have cable TV, I think you pay $49 per month, but they "Grandfathered" us in at the old price since we had it before they raised the price.

We would pay the extra if we had to...it is much better than a dial up.

Yes, much better! Faster, plus you never get timed out. Also, 10MG free web space, which we use for our auction pics.

I have looked at AT&T and Earthlink and AT&T gives you 6 emails and 60 mg web space for 21.95 a month. Earthlink gives you 6mg web space and doesn't say how many emails for 19.95 a month. Both say unlimited use.

Does anyone have either of these ISPs and if you have Earthlink can you tell me if you can have more than one email addy with the 19.95 service package? Guess I'll have to call them tomorrow and find out.

At&t does have a store front and some other interesting things but I only need unlimited time and a picture storage place for ebay!

I am also wondering about their dependability if anyone uses them.

Earthlink's "Family Pack" gives you 6 different screen names (e-mail addresses), plus each screen name gets 6MB of webspace, for a total of 36MB of webspace. It's just $2 extra a month for the Family Pack.

If you happen to use Sprint for your long distance, they'll give you $2 off your Earthlink bill each month.

They did have a promotion going where you could get a free digital camera (a cheapie one, but ...) when you signed up and stayed with them for 3 months, but I don't know if it's still in effect.

I hate AT&T! I used to have IBM but then I think AT&T bought them out. Lots of unexpected disconnects, then when I try to get back on it tells me sorry, I'm ALREADY on, and I'm just shafted for the next 30-45 minutes til it figures out I've been disconnected.

Recently switched to Earthlink and I like it MUCH better. They have a "family plan" that's like $2 extra and gives you 5 email addresses.

That is exactly what I need to know Triplesnack! Thanks! I hate disconnects and other strange happenings!

TheDewey, That is good to know. You have to pay another $2 to get more than one email , is that right?

rawbunzel -- Right. $19.95 gets you a month of unlimited access, 1 e-mail address, and 6MB of webspace. $21.95 gets you a month of unlimited access, 6 e-mail addresses, and 36MB of webspace.

Regarding access: I'm online for hours at a time, and I very rarely get disconnected ... once or twice a week maybe ... but I just re-dial and connect again with no problems. I don't think I've ever gotten a busy signal.
