My son's 2nd grade class has a program call "Star of the Week", where one student is picked each week to be the "star" Perks include completing a poster containing info like hobbies, family, pets, favorites etc, bringing your favorite things to school to share with the class, no homework for the week, and one day of the week they are allowed to bring in their "Special Person" who can explain their profession, do a craft, have a special snack, or teach a skill....

Having put this off back in Sept. until this week, I was at a loss on what to do with the class, since I'm a stay at home mom, I didn't think dusting, laundry and food shopping would bode well against the karate teacher, the doctor & car salemen who have been "special" before me....But then, like a stroke of genuis, it came to me!...HAVE AN AUCTION!!!...

So today at 2:00, I will don my eBay tshirt, gather my numbered auction paddles (numbered paper plates attached to craft sticks), pack up my auction treasures (yo-yos, mini skatesboards, glitter makeup, mini calculators etc) and head out to teach the next generation all about the wonderful world of auctions!...Promises to be a day to remember & great fun for all!!

Rancher, Stay at home mom's are very special people. They are all of the above and more. Have a great day and God help eBay.

Rancher, Stay at home mom's are very special people...Well, thanx fred! I used to believe that, til my brain turned to mush, luckily I found eBay before I was too far gone!!!

Sharkbaby here's a recap of the event:
The auction was a riot!!!....Seven year olds are pretty picky about what they want...We distributed the "auction money" and the paddles....Established a few rules and let 'er rip!....They bid cautiously, waiting to see if "something better" came along (cept when the finger bike came up, they all jumped for that one!)....We even had a couple of "snipers", kids who sat quietly, showing no interest in the item, then just as my gavel (a wooden spoon) was raised for going, going, gone they blasted their paddle into the air & won!....Couple of items were duds, so we made up "lots", 3 for one money kinda deals...They liked those!!!....Even had a mini dutch auction for identical items that a few kids wanted!....After we made sure each child had won something, we took the remainder of stuff & made them first bid wins or as we know it: BIN's...It was surprizing to see how quickly they BIN'd, when they had been so conservative in the first auction round...The feedback was awesome: the kids enjoyed it, the teacher was amused and my son was ecstatic...We ALL left winners!!! (Femme, I left the car salesman in the dust!!)

I explained eBay & all the wonderful things they could find there...Told them to go home and tell their parents all about it....I can honestly say, that I did my part in eBay advertising today!

Excellent! I have a setup I use to show screen printing to schools that I use, including each child printing a patch and having a coloring book to take home. Usually I am one of the more popular moms.

Rancher, you would have left me in your dust!

Congrats on a wonderful idea

That is so great. You realize that some people could have still managed to beat the topic to death with a stick by just doing a "talking heads" about it. But you gave all of them the chance to try out bidding and winning. The car salesman would have had to bring a fleet and let them drive around the playground to compete!!

What a great idea Rancher You sure are brave. The last time I spent the afternoon with a classroom full of 2nd graders it took me a week to recuperate. LOL

These last couple of years I just send cupcakes and wish everyone a nice time... from afar.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!
