Anyone here the full story on this? A blip came across the news. Something about a child who looked about 4 or 5 drowned in Tommy Lee's. Something about the au paire had already left and the child was alone.

Children should all learn how to swim just as soon as possible. We live in an area with water everywhere so my children started swimming lessons before kindergarden.
Most drownings, 65% occurr in home pools such as the one involved in this case.

"Daniel was the son of James Veres, a television producer, and Ursula Karven, an actress. The boy's father, who was not at the party, told a local radio station on Sunday that more people should have been supervising the children."
Gee - like - maybe the parents should have gone instead of having the nanny drop the kid off.
Parents behavior amazes me. My children never go to pool parties by themselves. I would never expect a party organizer to babysit all the kids at a pool party and still have a party. Not possible to do. I cannot believe Tommy Lee would have accepted that responsibility. Sounds like other parents were there. The au paire had already left so looks like mommy and daddy had the nanny drop off the 4 year old at a party to swim. Unbelievable.
This also brings up another point. Had someone known CPR this child might still be alive. Sounds like there was total confusion as to what to do for him etc.
Pool parties are at the top of the list for child drownings. Everyone thinks everyone else is watching. We always assign one of us to each of our little boys. Never switch etc. See story below why.
***********************
Same thing happened at a party my mother attended for one of her daycare kids. Everyone went inside and mom thought dad was watching - dad thought mom was - no one could find Ryan until they looked at the pool outside - he had drowned.
***********************
Another example for parents.

Why?
Because some irresponsible parent entrusted Tommy Lee with their 4 year old child at his pool party.
Most other parents were there - why would a 4 year old be dropped off, especially one that does not know how to swim?

ypayretail: the part about the 4 year-old being dropped off doesn't surprise me a bit. As a Children's Librarian I deal with parents on a daily basis who want to drop their kids (some as young as 2 1/2) off in the Children's Room and leave them there. Some want to go off into the A/V section or upstairs to the adult section, but I've also had some parents try to do this so they can go to the grocery store, to school (yes, adult school), to the DMV, and a myriad of other places. They become incensed when they learn that kids 9 years & below can *not* be left unattended. I've had parents literally yell at me when thwarted in this. Of course, I've also had to deal with parents who think its perfectly OK to dump their kids (of all ages) at the library all day, every day during school breaks/vacations & can't understand why we object. And almost every night one of us has to stay late after the library closes because parents haven't arrived to pick up their kids. The rules say that if they haven't arrived by 15-20 minutes after closing we have to call the police to pick up the kids & contact the parents. The screaming *really* starts at that point...
Some parents are shocked, simply shocked, to learn that the world is not their babysitter.

IMO, the child's father is just as responsible as anyone else, if not more so. He should have been there, supervising his own child, and if that wasn't possible, he should have had another trusted adult there for that specific purpose. You don't just drop a kid off at a pool party, and depend on "everybody else" to watch him/her.
Things can happen so quickly around water, even if the child does know how to swim, and regardless of the age of the child. Even adults shouldn't go swimming alone, IMO. It's way too easy to hit your head when diving in, or slip and fall (etc.), and things can get serious in a split second.
I once saw a grown woman slip off the ladder in 6' of water, and the lady was so surprised by the fall that she panicked and couldn't get back to the ladder. Fortunately another woman was close enough to grab her and pull her to the side of the pool before the situation got serious. If no one else had been there, she probably would have been in trouble.
My parents had my sister and me take swimming lessons when we were little, and I'm glad they did. But even when we were teenagers, they NEVER would have left us around water unless they were there personally to supervise us, swimming lessons or not.
But to drop off a 4-year-old at a pool party? Wow ....

I see little kids on tricycles on the side of the busy streets where I live; 4 and 5 year olds in empty lots playing; walking to the store to get candy. No parent around. None. Nada. Bunnicula, that does not surprise me, what you said. Parks are for kids to go to and the playground equipment is the babysitter. Libraries are babysitters. Community pools are babysitters. Big department stores and their toy section are babysitters. When my kids were growing up, I KNEW where they were because I was right there with them. But that was back then, and this is now.

I do have to say that if I had the kind of money these people have I would not consider having a party of this sort without hiring help to sit and watch the water 100%.
And they would be made to understand that they do not go off to the bathroom without handing of the watch and they don't stand and "chat" instead of look.
Once I was at teen pool party and they started throwing people in the pool sliding all over on the wet deck dropping people and throwing them in head first. It was obvious somebody was going to get hurt. Since I was the biggest guy there 6 of them decided I had to be thrown in. When they came for me I said I can see someone is going to get hurt here and it is not going to be me - it is going to be the first guy that grabs me. Fair warning and they still tried, and it was the first second AND third grabbers that got hurt and I was a poor sport for not letting them toss me on my head. I am sorry I broke one's thumb but it was around my wrist were it did not belong.
It soured me on pool parties.

Here where I live the local grocery store chain has a "care center" where you can drop off your children while you shop at THEIR store. It is a great idea for a mom or dad who has their hands full while trying to get groceries. However, I know of some who actually take their children there and leave the store to run errands then come back for them. Free and easy babysitting.
What is that saying about how stupid people should not be having children?

ZILvy - Righter than you can know. That's why my first wife left me because I was no fun.
She liked to go out and party hard and smoke pot and be wild. I thought all her friends sounded twice as silly high as sober. One night she brought a new bunch in and I was so bored I convinced them all I was an illegal alien from Argentina and she was mad at me for weeks.
