Though I have quit using PayPal, it seems to me that most people on here who are bashing it either 1) were breaking the user agreement or 2) don't seem to have 1 ounce of sense in terms of how credit cards/bank accounts etc. work! It is very easy to keep yourself from having any of these difficulties if you are simply careful and don't do things that are obviously shaky! As for holds on credit cards, this is a standard thing that happens all the time for all kinds of services, motels, gas pumps, etc! Why don't you foks get real before you keep bashing this stuff. No - thats not most of what's here. Try actually reading the threads.
The problem is PayPal made changes to TOS (which it apparently doing on a daily basis) without adequate and in some cases completely misleading notice and in other cases is freezing entire seller's accounts and not letting them withdraw their money for a month or more because supposedly PayPal hasn't got it together enough to only freeze the money on one transaction.
Maybe your credit card companies do that sort of thing to you. Mine doesn't.
I get really tired of people who apparently can't even read bashing everyone else.

Some are many legitimate arguments, others... I can only scratch my head about. One vocal opponent objected strongly about PayPal supposed 'access to bank account' and the proof of shipping. Then they completely negated their argument by saying they decided BillPoint was their choice. Suddenly real 'bank account access' and proof of shipping (unless eChecks are used) seems to be totally acceptable via another company.
I don't care what service someone chooses to accept, but when they blast PayPal for certain features and then turn around and cheerfully brag they accept them from another company I can only grin.

kateartist - You have made my point for me. PayPal isn't your credit card company. PayPal gets to do a lot of what it wants. And in fact, many of those people who have had their accounts frozen were in violation. If it was a credit card company, you're right, they'd zero in on one transaction - and you'd lose that money completely! At least with our Pal it is insured, if we follow the rules! I never bought anything using PayPal that actually had delivery confirmation on it, and many folks don't seem to know that they aren't supposed to be shipping to Timbuktu. So, how about you go accuse some other person of not being able to read, okay? People need to take some responsibility for the fact that they are taking payments thourgh credits cards, yet they never signed anything, never even read the agreement, etc! What did they expect with amateurs in all corners?

The seller has never signed anything, never read the agreement? They're not the ones taking payments through credit cards, so they are not responsible for that. PayPal is taking the payment and transferring the cash to the seller. As such, they should be the ones acceping the responsibilities that come along with taking that payment, since they (not the seller) are the party collecting the credit card information from the buyer.
What did they expect...
I imagine sellers expected a predictable process for transferring a payment from the buyer to the seller. It hasn't quite worked out that way, however.
