There's a current thread over on the Ebay Auction Listings board in which the auctions of a PayPal user were cancelled because s/he had included the PayPal "Instant Purchase" logo. According to the Ebay staffer who wrote her (a quote is included in the thread), the PayPal Instant Purchase feature is illegal on their site because it allows a user to purchase the item at anytime while the auction is listed, thereby circumventing Ebay fees. Damon, can you get to the bottom of this for us??

The buyer and seller have always had an opportunity to negotiate an off-eBay sale. This might make it a little easier to do but no more likely.

That was my thought. Using this argument, Ebay could conceivably decide it's against policy to include ANY icon for a payment service (other than Billpoint) that's a clickable link to the site. Personally, my take on this specific situation is that the staffer who cancelled these auctions didn't realize that neither the seller or PayPal was encouraging buyers to use this as a means of purchasing items outside Ebay before the auction closed. PayPal's FAQ on "Instant Purchase" specifically states that it is to be used after the auction closes. Could be too, that one of the higher ups decided to stomp out a little competition, since Ebay receives an additional fee if a seller uses Billpoint's new "Buy It Now" feature. Maybe they're hoping the sellers are so anxious to use something like this that they'll sign up for Billpoint, if the PayPal equivalent isn't allowed on Ebay.
