Hello Damon,

I have questions about purchases made with Paypal Debit Card.

On April 14th, I bought some stuff for $267.88 at www.Buy.com. As soon as I was done shopping, I checked my Paypal account and saw that the FULL amount has been debitted to my Paypal balance and marked Pending. I had enough money in my Paypal account to cover this amount. So I thought the transaction was successfull and I've paid the transaction in FULL with my Paypal balance.

Then I withdrawed my remaining Paypal balance and left $70 on my account.

But today, April 21st, I logged in into my Paypal account and saw that the transaction has been denied due to unsufficient fund. I thought my Paypal balance has been deducted right after I'm done shopping, that means I've paid the transaction eventhough it was marked Pending.

I checked the transaction history, but couldn't find the transaction with Buy.com on April 14th. I'm very sure it was there before, and my balance at that time has been deducted to show the $267.88 purchase. This means that I've paid the money since Paypal has debitted my account right after I made the purchase.

I firmly believe that I've paid this $267.88 transaction right after it showed on my Paypal account and my account at that time has been deducted with the same amount.

I don't want to pay twice for this transaction. That's $267.88 we're talking about, and that's a lot of money for me.

I'm totally confused with the way Paypal debit card works. Please help me clear this up, Damon.

Oh and another example, I bought something on April 17th over the internet for $83.75, and then logged in to my Paypal account right away and saw the transaction marked as Pending with incorrect amount ($48.81). And my balance at that time has been debitted for $48.81. I know this's common practice for some merchant not to submit the correct amount the first time.

Today I saw that the full amount ($83.75) has been charged to my account and marked Complete, but the one with the incorrect amount ($48.81) hasn't been removed and still marked Pending. This made my account to be negative. Right now my balance is -$6.03.

So basically I've paid twice for this transaction, $48.81 at the first time, and then the full amount of $83.75, totalling $132.56. The total amount was supposed to be $83.75, not $132.56.

I don't know if this has been going on since the first time I used the Paypal Debit Card. I trusted Paypal wouldn't double charged my account. But all these things are making me nervous. We're not talking about a measly dollar. We're talking about hundreds of dollars here.

Please help me out here Damon. I'm totally confused with the way Paypal Debit Card works. If this continues, I guess I'll switch to my bank Debit Card which doesn't give me headache.

Regards,
-th-

Hi,

I am not in to check the records on weekends and I would ask you to review your account history. I don't think you were double-charged but it could be possible that the item cleared after it had been pending. If you had withdrawn money before the transaction settled ---then I could see how you would have the issue. It sounds like (since I can't view it) that it didn't settle and then it did settle when the amount was available in the account.

You are more than welcome to send me the details but I won't be in until Monday to review it. You may want to contact customer service.

Hello Damon,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I will email you tomorrow with more details and will also email the customer service.

Some quick questions I've been wanting to get the answers:

Let's say I have $1,000 on my account. Then I bought a printer online for $300.00, and my Paypal balance shows the transaction I just made, and the balance is now $700.00 and the transaction is Pending.

Questions:
- Does this mean I've already paid in full for this transaction since my balance is $700.00 instead of $1,000?
- I'm still not clear about Paypal's definition of "Pending" when the full amount has been deducted from my balance. Why would the transaction marked "Pending" when the full amout is already deducted from my balance?
- After a few days there's a new entry for the same transaction in my Paypal account, but this time it's marked "Completed" and my account is deducted for $300.00. But let's say I'm not sure what my balance should be due to other small transactions. How do I know if I get double charged for this printer transaction?
- All I know for sure is that my balance was already deducted by $300.00 right after I made the purchase and when the transaction was still "Pending". If this new "Completed" transaction shows $300.00 charge, doesn't it mean my account was charged $300.00 twice?
- What will happen with the previous transaction that marked "Pending" when the newly "Completed" transaction is posted on my account? If it just dissapears, what would happen with the $300.00 amount deducted when it was still in "Pending" state?
- If the "Pending" transaction has deducted my account for $300.00 and the newly "Completed" transaction deducted another $300.00, that means that the transaction has been charged twice into my account, right?

I just hope Paypal can offer a much easier way to track and to view debit card transactions. I miss the old ways where for every transaction, there's a total of my balance right beside it.

Thanks for the answers, Damon.

Regards,
-th-

Pending just means the seller did not formally accept your payment yet. You will not be charged another $30 when he hits the accept button.
