Several school districts in Indiana are on lockdown now. I think people are freaking out and pulling their kids out of school.
My son is in the army. I don't even want to think about what is going to happen next. There are so many people calling for extreme measures in retaliation for this.
This is scary.

I live in NYC, in the borough of Brooklyn.
I live across the street from a synagogue which as we speak has a few policemen posted outside.
My cell phone is out, make outgoing phone calls is hit or miss (mostly miss). I can see and smell the smoke from out my window. There are constant sirens outside and the sound of military aircraft flying above happens every so often.
Thankfully my DSL line hasn't cut me offyet.
I have a lot of friends and neighbors who work in the Trade Center and in the downtown area. There is more than 2 inches of soot covering everything in the southern tip of Manhattan. It looks like a snowstorm. All 911 operators, police and fire personnel who were not on duty were called in.
When the explosion occurred, the sheer amount of debris and glass that showered down on the tons of people walking the street there is unimaginable.
I am overwhelmed beyond belief...

Our first concerns and prayers go to those who lost their lives and their friends and families.
Next, hoping that those who survived can be made whole again.
Then, find out who is responsible and issue
retribution, SWIFTLY, Mercilessly & with a finalty. If the individuals involved were on a "sacred mission and willing to die" I will bet their leaders only mouth those sentiments and would be the first to plead for mercy if facing down death!

I don't think so, Zilvy...
Some of these people are true zealots, IMO. In Lebanon, my dad helped train some Arab pilots. On several different occasions...when faced with personal fear...these men would remove their hands from the controls and give up their fate to Allah. Nothing my father did (including slugging one of them) could make them take back the controls and deal with the situation. They truly believed Allah would do it for them, and in any case, did not fear death.

Well this whole thing has me on edge. Just heard a low rumbling in the sky and my first thought was uh-oh. Ran outside and saw a squadron of three military helicopters (the ones with two big rotors, one at the front and back, sort of look like flying boats) heading towards the city.
CNN is reporting that battleships and aircraft carriers are being deployed up and down the east coast.

They remind me of the Jannisaries of old. Definetly religious zealots who will stop at nothing, because they SEE it as a religious war.

I don't think any more will happen. We are on too high alert now. This was so well coordinated how did we not have a clue? What about the planes, wasn't there any communication from them? How can several planes be hijacked at the same time and we didn't know?
Thank you everyone from the New York area for checking in letting us know you are safe, and the updates for what is going on around you.
Has anyone heard from Barry Barris yet?

I'm just wondering how and when they'll restart commercial flights. They couldn't prevent what happened today. What makes them think they can prevent it tomorrow? What will they do? Background checks on everyone who wants to purchase a ticket? Ban anybody who looks foreign from boarding?

Jeez, I'm seeing the path of one of the planes as tracked by radar this morning. Looks like it was flying far north of New York City, then literally hooked a left and made its run south towards Manhattan.
I guess they couldn't shoot it down because maybe they thought it was just an ordinary hijacking (if a hijacking can be ordinary).

This should never have been allowed to happen to begin with. HOW the hell did terrorists take over those planes? HOW did that other plane get so close to the pentagon to be able to slam into it? Lots of questions.

They've proved we can't stop the hijackings. The only alternative is to have a military fighter escort for all planes and blow them out of the sky if they deviate from the flight path. At this point how can we allow any plane into any of our air space ?
In any event, this disruption will be longer lasting than many may think and will cost billions.
I have heard two rumors. First that the plane in PA was shot down by the military, and second, the large Muslim population in Detroit was being attacked.
Anyone hear more about this ?

It was only a matter of time until muslims began to be attacked. So damn sad, this all is. I guess it isnt any different than when americans are attacked when we blasted other countries. Still, its a sad thing all around.

Just heard from Rocker ~ all is well.
(edited cuz mebbe should would mind my sharing!!)
excerpts:
It is a wasteland downtown. I can't go anywhere.. but don't want to anyway.
I will go nearby and give blood cos it is much needed.
I called everyone I know to check on my friends - one good friend John was right in the middle of it. Poor guy is in total trauma. He saw the burning bodies falling around him. It was so thick with smoke he could hardly breathe. He was one of the people running uptown, and around him he saw people falling to the ground in tears, grief, praying, crying.. it is a terrible terrible tragedy and I still have not been able to wrap my mind around this.
I look at the news and I see some of my city just gone.

Hepburn - that's what I want to know! How could all these planes be hijacked at the same time and we didn't know?
Who ever did it knew we have the weakest administration we have ever had, and maybe thought this would be a good time to strike. I would feel so much safer if Clinton was President. No, this is not a bash Bush statement, just my true feelings. I don't have faith that we will do the right thing. He scared me before, but he scares me more now. Bush wants star wars and he couldn't even protect New York. Star Wars wouldn't have done any good in this situation. Also, because we've alignated all other countries and treaties where do we stand now with that. Bush you are one stupid SOB!

chococake, your post is so offensive right now I don't know where to begin. Suffice it to say that I believe you are naive if you think that this has anything to do with Bush. It has obviously been in the works for a long time and was motivated, IMO, out of pure hatred for America.

Amen. Yes, I wish we had Clinton in there right now too. But at least we have Powell...which is better than nothing, and with Bush, we have nothing.
Its times like these that I miss krs (I know...thats a shocker coming from me). But he has a way of calming one down in disasters such as this with his way of posting. It would me, anyway.

Watching Peter Jennings and a reporter interviewed Sen. Biden. He did a great job of handling the questions and asked everyone to be calm. He wanted Congress to return ASAP and get back to normal operations and start working on this problem. As he said, any break in our usual way of life gives the terrorists what they want. He said we are a strong, capable nation and we wil deal with this tragedy.
In my opinion, he did what the President should be doing: showing his face, acting in control, and calling for calm and rational action. Where is that dim bulb? He's still flying around trying to decide where to go to be safe! I'm totally disgusted at his actions.

Im sorry to disagree at a time like this, but Bush has EVERYTHING to do with this. We are considered weak now, with a weak president. My prayers are with the dead, the dying, the ones still trapped...I hurt for them and have my candle still lit. And at the same time, Im still wishing we had someone in office that I trusted to keep us SAFE.
