Microbes so far I have heard Germany, England, France, the UN and of course the Anzus countries of Australia and New Zealand, I am sure that there will be others come forward to support the US. As I heard it said just now on the news, this is not just a terrorist attack on the US but it is a declaration of war on the civilized world.

Gravid yes you are right there are a lot of other nations awaiting news of our fellow country men and women. We know that one of our major banks has an office in the WTC and they have said that all there people are accounted for, but another really big Australian Business that has offices in the centre have some people not accounted for, so the world waits with America and we all pray as one.

Netta - Sky News has just reported that 3 Australians have been confirmed dead but no numbers on the ones still unaccounted for.

*edited to add: I just flicked channels - 58 Australians unaccounted for....

Nothing else, Netta - the figures were released by the Foreign Affairs Dept. I expect we'll hear more tomorrow.

Has anyone else heard about several planes being tracked by Canada? Just heard something about it on CNN and they said they have no idea why these planes are flying.

I've bitten my tongue long enough.

In reply to a post on the previous page...

Yea, Hepburn, you are one "bad chick."

You would have done what 266 people were unable to do.

Let's hope you are never put to the test.

Nanastuff, I just heard about those planes. Our news reported that there were 3 of them and that the Canadian Air Force was tracking them and trying to make contact but so far they did not know who they were and where they are from. The reporter could not even say what size these planes are.

The one thing that they did say was that it would probably be a false alarm. I hope so.

I certainly hope searchers recover flight data recorders, especially the one with cockpit voice from the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. The early reports make it sound like some true heroism may have been involved there, what with the cell phone call report of several passengers resolving to rush the hijackers. I have little doubt, if that is what happened on that plane, that they may have avoided an umcoming attempt to crash into either the White House or Capitol.

I am also quite amazed at the quality of news coverage, the way NBC and CNN in particular have assembled thoughtful announcers and interviewed a full range of subjects from average citizens to informative and statesmanlike officials like Mayor Jiuliani and Colin Powell, and ex-officio personages like N. Schwartzkopf and even Tom Clancy. Frankly, the news shows seem to be doing on their own for US morale and information what I would have hoped to have been done by now in a more direct way by the federal government. Perhaps it's an indication of just how strong our society has become?

I looked at cnn.com and they had a "breaking news" at the top of the page. It said that authorities in Western Canada were tracking 3 planes. CNN took the banner off, but I can't find anything to say that it was a rumor from them.

One message board did say that they were humanitarian planes - I hope so.

Posting more security guards on planes and airports won't make any difference. Yes, it helps, but there's a vast arsenel of weaponry that could never be detected--what about a rope or even a shoelace used to strangle? A karate-chop expert who kills with a blow to the neck? A pen-sized squirt bottle of some type of killing chemical? Criticizing our airlines or national security is reduntant--if there's a will, there's a way...and terrorized people (despite how "bad" they are) on a plane are no match for trained killers ready and willing to do their job.

I'm reminded of the debate years ago about automobile safety. The comment was made that it was certainly possible to make a completely safe automobile -- it would look like an Abrams tank, weigh 10 tons, and cost over $1 million. In reality, though, drivers are willing to accept a certain amount of risk in exchange for the convenience and affordability of being able to drive a car.

I think the same thing applies here. Sure, we could strip search every passenger at the gate and require people to wear paper smocks and be locked into their seats before take-off, and that might make highjacking impossible. But how many passengers would be willing to put up with that? Instead, people will be willing to accept a certain amount of risk in exchange for the ease and affordability of plane travel.

In other words, I don't think there's anything that can be PRACTICALLY done to absolutely prevent this sort of thing from happeneing again, even if there are things that can be POSSIBLY done.

Hepburn,

I have talked with people who have the same thoughts as you do - why didn't the people on the plane stop these men?

My thoughts are that perhaps the passengers were hopeful that this was one of the more 'ordinary' hijackings. (Ordinary hijackings???).

What I mean is that many hijackings have happened where the plane is taken over, landed, surrounded, negotiations begin, and passengers are let off as the hijackers get what they want, or are overpowered.

Perhaps they didn't all believe they were going to die.....

we are civilized, we are civilized, we are civilized .... how can we expect others to believe it of us if we can't remember it ourselves?

I heard this morning on the news that the passengers on the Plane that crashed in PA may have been the reason the plane didn't make it to its destination. Someone on a cell phone said they were going to do something about the situation.

NBC News is stating at this moment that a bomb sniffing dog has given a positive response to a package found in the Empire State Building!

The building has been evacuated.

Anyone want to guess how long it will take before somebody denies that it ever happened?

I give it until they sweep up the last debris. Just like they deny the holocaust and the moon landing. I can hear them now - It was all done in the studio just like a star wars movie. - They went back and inserted fake pictures of the buildings in all the photos.

Think I am kidding?
