All it would take for most of the public to accept a declaration of martial law is another attack as bad or worse than 9/11.
Since they keep predicting that it WILL happen I can't imaigine they are not poised to take advantage of it. I am a little surprised they did not use 9/11 as an excuse.
The President has had the power for decades to set aside all constitutional government at the stroke of a pen because we are in a perpetual state of emergency. They can then tell indutry what to produce - restrict travel - set prices - total control.
From what you have seen so far does this sound like something Bush would want if it was within his power?

Absolutely. It's pretty obvious that he chaffs at having to ask for anything, and no doubt believes that since he is the supreme ruler he should not be made to stoop to that.
Also, one year of martial law would delay elections that much. If they time it right, a tear's worth would mean that his term would be a total of nine tears presuming his reelection. Two years = ten years, and like that.
