The Third Infantry Regiment at Fort Myer has the responsibility for providing ceremonial units and honor guards for state occasions, White House social functions, public celebrations and interments at Arlington National Cemetery....and standing a very formal sentry watch at the Tombs of the Unknowns. The public is familiar with the precision of what is called “walking post” at the Tombs. There are roped off galleries where visitors can form to observe the troopers and their measured step and almost mechanical silent rifle shoulder changes. They are relieved every hour in a very formal drill that has to be seen to believe. Some people think that when the Cemetery is closed to the public in the evening in the evening that this show stops. First, to the men who are dedicated to this work...it is no show...it is a “charge of honor”. The formality and precision continues uninterrupted all night. During the nighttime, the drill of relief and the measured step of the on duty sentry remain unchanged from the daylight hours.
To these men...these special men, the continuity of this post is the key to the honor and respect shown to these honored dead, symbolic of all American unaccounted for American combat dead. The steady rhythmic step in rain, sleet, snow, hail, hot, cold...bitter cold...uninterrupted...uninterrupted is the important part of the honor shown. Last night, while you were sleeping, the teeth of hurricane Isabel came through this area and tore hell out of everything... We have thousands of trees down...power outages...traffic signals out...roads filled with down limbs and “gear adrift” debris...We have flooding...and the place looks like it has been the impact area of an off shore bombardment.
The Regimental Commander of the U.S. Third Infantry sent word to the nighttime Sentry Detail to secure the post and seek shelter from the high winds, to ensure their personal safety. THEY DISOBEYED THE ORDER...During winds that turned over vehicles and turned debris into projectiles...the measured step continued. One fellow said “I’ve got buddies getting shot at in Iraq who would kick my butt if word got to them that we let them down...I’m sure as hell have no intention of spending my Army career being known as the go@dam idiot who couldn’t stand a little light breeze and shirked his duty.”
....Then he said something in response to a female reporters question regarding silly purposeless personal risk....”I wouldn’t expect you to understand. it’s an enlisted man’s thing.” God Bless the rascal...In a time in our nation’s history when spin and total bull$hip seems to have become the accepted coin-of-the-realm, there beat hearts...the enlisted he arts we all knew and were so damn proud to be a part of...that fully understand that devotion to duty is not a part time occupation. While we slept, we were represented by some damn fine men who fully understood their post orders and proudly went about their assigned responsibilities unseen, unrecognized and in the finest tradition of the American Enlisted Man. Folks, there’s hope.... The gene that George S. Patton...Arliegh Burke and Jimmy Doolittle left us...survives.

On the ABC evening news, it was reported tonight that, because of the dangers from Hurricane Isabel approaching Washington DC, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They refused. “No way, Sir!”
Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a service person. The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
Addition to this e: I saw an interview on Fox News Channel with the Commander of the soldiers who guard the Tomb of the unknown. He took the shift when Isabel was unleashing her fury, cause he did not want to ask any of his men to do this - he felt it was his highest honor to be on duty during that time.

I live just a few miles from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The worst problem related to Isabel was loss of electricity along with wind and rain.
The military assigned to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were relatively safe when compared to the dangers being faced by their members in Baghdad. Wind, rain and electricity outage are trivial concerns in comparison to the danger of war in Iraq. I am sure that the guards would be embarrassed by this writer's tribute to their courage under bad weather conditions.

Let me tell you something, Bear. You cannot tell me where to post or what to post. The fact that you cannot comprehend the meaning of my comment is unfortunate but not my problem.
I am probably more supportive of the military than you and your neocon pals are. Those who want to put the military in unnecessary danger in order to advance political agendas cannot be seen as supportive of the troops. They can only be seen as users of the troops.
Try reading my comment and you will see that I said nothing derogatory about the troops. My criticism was focused on the degree of exaggeration used by the writer to promote a feature or personal interest type article.

Those are WONDERFUL articles, bear. So many of us are very thankful that we have men and women in the service that uphold our valued traditions.
The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
And I know many are thankful that tradition was not broken even during such a clear warning about how bad things might become during that night.

My cousin is an Honor Guard in Arlington and gave my Mother the Flag at my Dad's funeral. My family does understand Honor and duty and we do get "IT". We find overblown blow-hards offensive and probably are just wannabees or spent their service in a cushy job.
You assume all of us liberals are just one way. We are not. My family has a long history of fighting for freedom. My Dad was highly decorated and highly respected and got an actual 21 gun salute and taps with an actual buglers and not someone faking it with a tape or CD playing in the background.

Those who have, have EVERY right to wrap themselves in the glory.
And, imo, you have no right to down play their contribution to this country. They too are honored by everyone that respects what it takes to be a soldier. Those who have never served have NO IDEA what it takes.
Having family who has served in the military and received honors, many can claim, doing it yourself is a whole different ball game. They should be honored right along with all who have served their country.

Well Linda since you ask. I am permanently disabled from training for service to my country. I do not hear to well from the accident but I sure can listen. By the way, I do not get nor have ever applied for disability.
You neo-cons do make me and others of the left who have sacrificed sick. You present the right as the only ones who have served and sacrificed. Bush deserted, PERIOD. Gore served and saw combat which is much more then your heroes GW Bush, John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney, Bill O'Rielly, Tom Delay or Paul Wolfowitz did. They did everything they could to dodge service. Yet you worship and support them.
I have many, many friends and family I will never see again and you neo-con (supply your own terrible insult here) try to wrap yourselves in the flag and claim you are the only ones who served. You live a lie.

Disabled while in training to serve? That tells me you never even entered the service. The first thing anyone in basic learns is that they ARE part of the U.S. military and are serving their country then and there.
As far a wrapping myself in the glory of the flag, you bet I do. I know my family & I have earned the right to do so. I can trace my family back to Plymouth rock & to those who have fought in EVERY battle on US & foreign soil from the American revolution, to the Alamo & Vietman.
