Nevermind HCQ, I just reread your post where you said you caught the smelt in Vermont. Wishful thinking on my part that they could be found in Florida!

Uh... they are bait.

And talking of weird: Does anybody here eat those scary, artificial-red pickled pigs' feet that they sell in the jars in the blue-collar bars (sounds like a Billy Joel lyric)? Do you actually enjoy them? Or is it some kind of guy thing - the adult equivalent of goading Billy into eating an earthworm?

One of the things I missed most when I moved from Chicago to CA was White Castle. I remember waiting in line because it was always so busy and the smell would drive me crazy. Then I'd grab that bag and eat two before I hit the door.

Hard to explain those little "buggers" to people who never heard of them. I tried those frozen ones and they were awful. That was when they first came out. But, you know what the next time I go to the store I'm going to try them again. You all made me homesick for them. I wonder if they could be expressed mailed somehow?

When I was in the army in basic training my crazy friends sent me two dozen Dunkin Donuts.
I had to do 20 pushups during mail call to get them but stale as they were they tasted like heaven. We cut them in quarters and the whole platoon shared them.

Chococake: I tried the frozen white castle burgers , your right they are awful. Everyone I have ever met from Chicago raved about White Castle. If I ever get there I will be sure to try them.

Hey, maybe somebody should list White Castle / Krystal burgers on eBay ....

Ooooh! Dunkin Donuts! I haven't been there in years! I always loved those "donut holes". Yum!

The supermarket-frozen White Castles are indeed nearly inedible, but like tegan's stale doughnuts better than nothing if you're truly desperate.

As I noted earlier, "real" Krystals freeze (in your home freezer, right in their little boxes) great. 45 seconds in the micro and it's just like being there. You might try to prevail upon some Chicago buddies to freeze you several dozen and ship 'em like they do lobster, Express, with a a block of dry ice

HCQ
Yea but you can always dunk a stale donut in your coffee. Especially the plain ones, I actually I like um like that.
I've been away from Chicago for a long time and don't have any one there but one cousin. Maybe I'll ask her, she did send my mom Polish sauage once.

HCQ

How about a nice PIG-POT-PIE, and a side of porkrines? Then you can make yourself a nice pair of pigskin boots with the hide to keep your hooves warm this winter.

Give it a rest, Tom - or should I say "Weldon"? Your emails, BTW, are hilarious. Too bad you're sendiing them from your Wilshire Boulevard office.

emails on ...

by the way, have you ever had chitlins? I personally don't like them, but there is a whole "Chitlin' Strut" Festival once a year in Salley, SC -- it's where my dad's people are from.

They sell chitlins ("chitlin's"? "chitlins'"?) by the 5-gallon bucket down here - you know, like the way you buy house paint at Home Depot. (Gives me the heebies, but as a broiled-marrow-on-toast kind of gal - and we're not talking summer squash, my British friends - I can hardly be justified in saying "eeew" any way but under my breath.

I've never gotten close enough to find out how "they" cook chitlins. My suspicion is "breaded and fried," but my mind's eye always sees them stuffed and in red sauce, like calamari...I know that can't be right.

There are so many restaurants in Boston's Chinatown that they can specialize. One does nothing but "congee," which appears to be a kind of dinner porridge (somebody enlighten me here). Special of the house is garnished with "gelatinous tendon."

Ah well. I can only imagine what the congee-eaters would think of our "bawled" peanuts...

But I LIKE "bawled" peanuts!

After some thought I realized that since the full term for the aforementioned delicacies is "chitterlings," the colloquial abbreviation should be spelled "chit'lins."

From what I have read in the newspaper, they are deep fried in large pots - and you don't want to be downwind while they are cooking.

I'm sorry, but pig intestines--whether boiled or fried--just don't do a thing for me.

keith--well, if it ain't old home day! i loved your putting university in quotes. my mother graduated from there--cum laude. of course, i don't suppose that's very hard to do since most of the students there are imported for the purposes of basketball. i was at state during your reign at the station. i had a great old '65 buick special and i listened to your station! i was a huge fan of fast eddy--thought david fee was so cute! loved that buick--could pick this blues station out of arkansas late on clear nights. worked at k-mart, too, until they fired me for continually ringing items up in key 1 when they weren't key 1 items. worked at the safari, too, until it burned down (suspicious, wasn't it??) in feb. of 85. loved the pizzas at george's and went to the bunnywash. the good old days!

More things to add, (I promise not to get into a White Castle/Krystal debate)

Fried catfish steaks, or perch or whiting fish sandwichs. Pulled barbecue beef or pork shoulder ( I don't eat pork, but know how tasty it is) for a sammich. Cheese grits with shrimp. Three-cheese baked macaronni, mixed greens, sliced tomatoes and onions and feta, corn, butter beansm and chili. Ohm, what a casserole.
