Red beets... BLEEEEECCCHHH... I still remember sitting at the dinner table for about 3 hours ("you're not leaving until you finish your dinner" ) and finally choking them down, only to run to the bathroom afterward!

edited to get rid of inadvertent smiley

Ewwww. Licorice. YUK! Red is ok, but black licorice is bad. Black jelly beans too.

Just thinking about that...I gotta go brush my teeth again.

Red "licorice" is NOT licorice at all!!! It is simply a candy (mostly corn syrup IIRC) that is molded to look like like licorice sticks. True black licorice is delicious! Even like licorice candy-coated, as in Good 'N Plenty

Has anyone else noticed that licorice is one of those words that begins to look *strange* after you have written it a few times? To the point of making you check a dictionary even though you know you have spelled it correctly?

Canned green peas. I still gag at the thought of eating them. I was forced to eat them and I threw up nearly every time.

Ive learned alot about those peas since then tho. Split pea soup is wonderful. Dried peas coated with some kind of hot n spicy flavor from the oriental store are to die for.

I have a rule for my kids....... they MUST try everything. They are not allowed to say they dont like something before trying it. They try it and dont like it at home fine, they try it and dont like it at someone elses house they eat two bites, NEVER mention they hate it and fill up on the other stuff. So they can say they are full and not hurt anyones feelings.

My kids have eaten and have loved more exotic foods than most Okies have ever even heard about.

Remember that stringy vinegar-soaked spinach they served in the school cafeteria? They just sort of plopped it onto your tray in a big disgusting lump? YECCCCCHHHHH!

Another nasty food that my Norwegian grandmother cooks every Christmas is Lutefisk. It smells horrible and it kind of slithers down your throat. You don't even have to chew it. (It's fish). I don't know how this awful stuff became a Norweigian tradition.

Anisette - was a biggy at the holidays, and all the adults smelled like drunken licorice.

Peanut butter & honey sandwiches on white bread - school lunch horror.

All time hated grossest yukkiest disgustingest food ever - scallops. ew

ok following up after I read most of the messages. I am surprised at the scope of things people hate!

I love mince pie, liver & onions, rhubard pie, brussels sprouts, carrot cake, SCALLOPS, all that weird stuuf. Although I must admit I hat haigis! & Tongue BLEECH! I forgot to add I hate cod now that I spent 2 weeks in Portugal & that is all they have to eat there.

Hi dejavu - You said, "I am surprised at the scope of things people hate!" My thought is that not liking a certain food, can really depend on how it was cooked/prepared when one first tastes it. If the cook didn't know to prepare it, that could influence whether or not it is enjoyed.

What I have also noticed in these food threads is that others had parents who forced them to remain at the table, sometimes for hours, until their plates were clean. Bet few parents today, force their children to clean their plates when the child has tried the food and finds it very objectionable.
