inot, you are right I did not pay attention to your post, sorry. I also sell antiques and collectibles for about 40 years full time. I also have about 4500 Ebay feedback's. I am not kidding when I say a lot of items selling today on ebay are selling for less than they did 20 years ago. That is not what I call a good market.

Hey BIGPEEPA,
That's OK, it's hot here and I am cranky, which is why I reposted it. I'm better now.
40 years is a long time! I'll bet you have some good stories. I've been collecting for about 25 years, since I was a kid. I used to spend my allowance on "junk" as my mom put it. My first store purchase was a pair of lilac and butterscotch bakelite vanity lamps..I still have em! Paid $7.00 for them...which was alot for me then!
I know what you mean about prices being down. I hit my peak collecting approx 15 years ago...stuff was sooooo expensive then. I will not sell any of my own collections now becasue prices are so depressed. But look at all of the inventory there is out here now! 15 years ago, I had to physically scout Antique shows and flea markets. Finding that rare so & so was difficult, and dealers could name their price. Remember when reference price books actually meant something? now they are laughable for the most part. Ebay has changed the way people buy/ sell & collect. I just meant that my sales are good for what I am selling....mostly decorative vintage items ( linens, fabric, pottery, china, garden stuff). I also sell alot of things on consignment. My regular consignors don't care what they get for anything, they are professional "estate buyers" and "pickers". They are happy to get rid of the stuff at a profit without having to do any of the work.
But I do hope sales pick up for you!

Its hard to believe so few people here really understand the economics of supply and demand. I sell in the antiques and collectibles section and have done so since mid 1997.

It's over! Does noone understand that concept? Rarity is gone! Rarity is what drives up prices (along with condition). Knowledge is power and that knowledge is alot easier to get than it was 10 years ago.
You generally had to wait for a collector book to come out. It will be worse when PDAs with wireless remote access to the internet become so popular that people bring them to the shows and garage sales. (yes, I've seen people with laptops at sales)

Oh, I know there are items still selling for a good penny or two but not with the consistency that we saw up until 2000. Too many sellers; not enough buyers or buyers who haven't completed their specific collection.

Someone will generally have (antique or new) your item in better condition, in a better box, or willing to sell it for less on eBay.
You're dealing with a product or inventory. It isn't any different than if you were selling nails at the hardware store or vegetables at the mom and pop store before the big boys moved in.

I sell generally from mid Oct to mid March.

This belongs in the Roundtable, and actually the moderator should move it.

Now as to the topic, we're in deflation times -- DEFLATION MEANS FLAT OR LOW PRICES.

Says who? You? This is a topic about the current markets so it has every right to be on the outlook.

You are free to post or not to post, but its not up to you to decide if it belongs here or not

YEEHAW! the Lackey finally had an original thought.

Oh come on, let's get real here bud. Kiara has some great insights in her posts and thinking. She is far from being anybody's lackey as you put it.
Might be time to order out for a pizza, six pack and a hooker and you just might lose some of that stress. Life is good.

Hi inot,
twelvepole says people with the same condescending tone he uses when he refers to us as whiney a$$ b*tches and sneaky little b*tches and lackeys.

Definitely an insecure little man who loathes females and only feels empowered when he puts down others and all done behind the safety of his computer.

This belongs in the Roundtable, and actually the moderator should move it.

Salgal48, I realize you just signed up a week or so ago (in fact you knew zip about selling) so who are you to say where threads belong? FYI, there are no moderators here and for the most part we police ourselves.

Way to go, Kiara! If you feel the need to be on a board where a moderator interfers with the discussion, why not go there instead? We're all just fine here.

That's a wonderful juvenile response, isn't it? Hit a nerve did we?

That's even low for you, that kind of a statement.

May the bird of paradise sh*t in your shorts.

This is such a ridiculously juvenile thread. It started off with a legit question/comment and now every teenager in the group has chimed in.

Guys, take your juvenile stuff to another board. I want to read legit comments.

Salgal48, I think you are a bit confused.

Most of us are free thinkers and we say what we want to here and we don't take orders from fellow posters that dictate to us.

We write what we want to say, it's called freedom of speech. You don't have to read it.

Hee! Hee!

Ya knoe da really wierd thing? When this board WAS moderated, it was 100% MORE nasty than now, UNMODERATED!

Yikes! I fondly remember when sweet ole HCQ would rip off my head & poop down me esophagus after some of my early innocent questions!

Or...Remember the Canadian Bob's? All bow to the mighty MapleLeaf Kings!

Tis a kinder gentler EO the last year! I get a real hoot out of newbie SadGal!

HCQ. There's a blast from the past. ... yes, that lady was definitely spicy. Never had a quarrel with her myself but I saw her unload both barrels many times.

Speaking for my own auctions, I can guess why sales are down. Can't say for sure.

1) One of the categories I like to list in has been flooded by three or four sellers who spam the search listings (they've been reported, to no avail) and are selling so cheaply, in such volume, that everyone else's stuff gets drowned out. I am not saying that putting up a lot of listings, or selling very cheaply, is inherently wrong. But I've had more than one bidder mention that they've stopped "browsing" and just bookmarked the listing pages of sellers they like. More than one poster here has mentioned that they never browse categories any more for this very reason.

2) Possibly as a result of dealing with these big-volume, low-personality sellers, people are losing some of the confidence they once had about buying on eBay.

3) We're running out of newbies. eBay was based in large part on a growth model; Bidders get hooked, turn into sellers and sell to new bidders who then get hooked. That worked when people were still finding out about eBay, but does that apply to anyone in the country any more? Looking back, I think we'll see this period as the time of the eBay "bubble" when everyone wanted to sell and nobody wanted to buy.

4) The economy is the toilet and people don't know how far down it will go.

My sales are just as good as they always have been. Even actually up about 9 percent. I never will understand why people blame one political party or another. I am no George Bush fan, but the man has nothing to do with the way I do business.
I work my butt off to make my business work, not come to the boards and whine about what a lousy president we have or boo hoo about a lousy business climate it is. You make or break your own business folks. I take full responsibility for my business either being up or down, I don't cop out and blame a president or anyone else.

Wow ! ROFLMAO I just read this thread and holy cow you guys thats the best laugh I've had in a few day ....looked like a mud slinging contest...ding ding and in this corner ... lol
Now back to the point of the thread I still consider myself a newbie but from what everyone is saying it slows down this time every year .You can either list and hope it sales or take a vacation for a month or 2.I really wouldn't blame the slow down on anyone. My sales are running about the same maybe just alittle slow but not enough to say it's hurting me ,But I sell alot of small things I pick up from yard sales not antiques or new stuff i get from large companys .I get lucky and find something hot about every two weeks (fall in #*!@ and come out smelling like a rose as my brother would say)Which is what keeps me selling.I for one am truely happy to have this board to come and ask questions .I feel I can learn something new everyday here, and would like to say Thank You all for the help you've given me.So put them boxing gloves down and come out kissing !

lol, twelvepole. What's this, now you are stooping to fat jokes?

Actually I have always had a problem putting on weight so now I can hardly wait to get off work so I can have a big strawberry ice cream cone.

Yup, I can take care of myself but it's you that I wonder about. Did you ever see that pic of Trai? LOL

RL business is up and down, just like ebay. In fact right now it's so quiet that's why I'm here. And it does depend what you sell, my last auctions did very well.

At first why would any one find politicians at faught for sales down on ebay, but after you think about it they really are to blame. After they get through with pushing an internet tax ebay will hurt tremendously
