Press Release
A multi-agency investigation is underway involving GAMETEK / PS2CART.com. The investigation is being conducted by the Fountain Valley Police Department, the Palo Alto Police Department and the United States Postal Inspector's Office.
GAMETEK apparently has been receiving numerous orders for Playstation 2 Systems. As of this date, they have no Playstation 2 Systems to ship and the probability of them receiving the games prior to, or even after the promised shipping dates is not likely. According to Sony (via Sony.com), only 500,000 to 700,000 systems made it to the US. That breaks down to 10,000 to 14,000 for each of the 50 states in the US.
If you have placed an order with GAMETEK, it would be to your best interest to stop payment on whatever payment method you used; credit card, money order, cashier's check. GAMETEK's web site was taken off-line by GAMETEK and you are unable to cancel your order through them.
If you have already placed an order with GAMETEK for Sony Playstation 2, please fill out the form below. Your name will be added to a list of potential victims. You may be contacted shortly reference this investigation.
The owner of GAMETEK has been contacted and interviewed. No arrest has been made at this time. The investigation is continuing.
12-11-00 0800 hrs (Update)
Sorry, not much to update at this time. This type of investigation can take a considerable amount of time to complete, as certain records that are needed take several weeks to obtain. Be assured that everything that can be done is being done to bring this investigation to a successful conclusion.
The question being asked most is, "Am I going to get my money back?" Several bank accounts belonging to GAMETEK have been frozen. When this investigation is complete, it is likely that you will receive a refund of your money, whether full or partial. Due to the amount of time this type of investigation takes, it is unknown when refunds will be made.
12-18-00 1730 hrs (Update)
On Friday, 12-15-00, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office authorized money to be returned to those who paid via PayPal. PayPal is currently working on a process to deal with the refunds. They should have it in place in a few days. If you paid using PayPal, they will contact you directly. As for those people who paid via check or money order, you will have to wait awhile until this case is adjudicated as accounts can not be accessed by law enforcement until that time.

loudog...
I had a cashier's check made out to gametek, when the site went down I went to the bank to cancel - they said no. then I found this site and the police report and printed these and went back to the bank. With the fountain valley/gametek report showing the three police depts involved the bank put a hold on the check. Mine had not been cashed yet. Go to your bank or other facility that issues the thing with your receipt or copy. Find out if it has been cashed. IF it has NOT, you have 30 days from the point of issuance that you have to wait before getting your money back. This is what I did and I was extremely lucky it was not cashed. HOWEVER, IF it has been cashed you will need to show copies of the fountainvalley/gametek police report and go through the proper channels for attempting to get reimbursed or something to that effect working through sending a report through the fountainvalley/gametek report AND from the agency that sold you the money order or cashier's check (more forms/reports to fill out. When they come to a conclusion about this case, I am sure that the monies frozen in the gametek accts et al, will be diseminated to the victims involved. IT may not be all the money you spent but it will be something. Keep in mind it may take something like 6 months for a conviction etc. The magnitude of this case lends it a higher value to pursuing the solving and reimbursement of it's victims. There are a lot of us victimized.

I find it interesting that ps2cart's whois info shows an administrative contact of Tu, Tam and yet we have seemingly innocuous replies to this thread from a "tamtu" who signed up curiously on Dec 5th.
You too can look up the information on ps2cart.com at http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois
It may be nothing, but then again, if I had a good thing going, this would be one of places I would stop to dispel some of the bad publicity that was arising over my little "gold mine".

Where can I get the police report to take to the bank. I really need to get my money back. This really pisses me off.

Here's an update. I too placed an order with ps2cart, but I never sent in the paypal cash. This was a sort of backup plan on my part. Anyway, wired posted an article at http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nf/20001213/tc/playstation_frenzy_wreaks_e-tail_havoc_1.html covering the scams.

Well, Paypal did refund my money on the 28th. I received an email "letter of declaration" and faxed it back. Three days later the money was credited back to my debit card/bank account.

Sit back and contemplate how much better off you would have been if you had paid by credit card.
There's not much else you can do, and not much hope.

Don't be so fatalistic---the accounts have been frozen, your report has been filed, the police site say there will be partial refunds and maybe full refunds. Keep checking the police site--there is bound to be an update when they have something new to update.
You should double check and see if the money order actually was cashed, take the police report to where you purchased the money order.

Cashier's checks can have a 'stop payment' issued on them (just like a regular check). It is possible that the check was not cashed because they had already frozen their assets. Take your cashier's check receipt to the bank where you purchased it, along with other supporting evidence.

I just wanted people to know that I received my refund from paypal. I kept emailing them and asking for information and why i hadn't got it yet, but all along it was credited back to my credit card and not in my paypal account(12-29) They never even told me they did this but I just noticed that today, so if you are expecting a refund check your credit card.

I too received a credit to my credit card, not to my paypal account, and i was not notified by them via email or phone. I just happened to check my cc statement online and noticed on 12-29 that they credited it. I signed the affidavit and faxed it around the 15th of Dec. Thanks for not letting me down Paypal!

Is there anyone out there who paid by check/money order who has gotten a refund yet? There has to be something better we can do rather than sit around...waiting...for the police to magically get our money for us. What if 6 months go by and they don't retrieve a dime...by then it'll be too late to organize a class action suit. Your thoughts and opinions are helpful!
