It's true. I read it in the paper this morning and he confirmed on CNN today that he is strongly considering running for President on the Democratic ticket.

He's looks like he's spiffed himself up some, lost some weight, but that hair will never do. I wouldn't vote for the guy if he was the ONLY person running for President. But what about everyone else? Any opinions on his chances of securing the Democrat nomination in 2004? It seems kind of early for this sort of announcement, and I have a feeling that there is something else at play here. Whatcha think?

That would be a fun campaign to follow. I'd probably vote for him in a primary.

Sorry - I don't know how to make this a link.

This was in my email. It does not necessarily reflect the political opinions of MrsSantaClaus (or does it?)

He's a buffoon. I think he does more to harm race relations than anything else.

This is a cheap bid to grab some limelight for himself. The New York Police haven't gotten themselves in hot water in a few weeks, so Al's been left with no opportunity to bellow "This is an outrage!" or to hold up traffic while chanting "No justice, no peace!"

I lost respect for Geraldo Rivera when he started featuring Al Sharpton as a regular commentator on Rivera Live. To be fair, Geraldo had already disgusted me by adding Jerry Falwell as a regular commentator even before that.

Two reasons why Al Sharpton won't run for President:

* Tawana Brawley

* He'll have to make his tax returns public.

Pulled from a news archive:

n 1991, Sharpton led angry and violent demonstration's in Harlem's Crown Heights neighborhood following the accidental death of a black child in an automobile accident involving Orthodox Rabbi Menachem Schneerson. Sharpton led demonstrators chanting the words "Kill the Jews" and "Jewish bloodsuckers." During 4 days of violence, a young Talmudic scholar named Yankel Rosenbaum was stabbed to death by an anti-Jewish mob.

In 1995, Nicholson added, Sharpton instigated a race-oriented protest against a Jewish-owned clothing store in Harlem, Freddy's Fashion Mart. Accusing the owners of being "white interlopers," Sharpton whipped the crowd into such a frenzy that one of the demonstrators, Roland White, set the store ablaze, killing 7.

I remember that well, and believe the 7 killed were all local residents.

This is not a person I would not like to see elected to any office.

Al Sharpton For President?

Let me just say this:

Over my dead body.
Yeah, right, and I'm the Pygmie Queen.
When pigs fly.
In a pigs eye.
Not in THIS lifetime.
When hell freezes over.
Not a snowball's chance in hell.
No way, no how, no Al.

Next question?

Hi KatyD...

Maybe he's fool enough to think he can rise from the ashes of Jesse? Nah. He's just an ass.

I think you touched a nerve with this thread, Katy, LOL.

For the record, I have nothing against a black man being President. Colin Powell would likely do a good job. Hell, I would have voted for Powell in a heartbeat rather than Gore or Bush.

Kind of puts things in perspective when you consider Powell and Sharpton in a side by side comparison.

Sure he's a buffoon. What amazes me is that some take him seriously.

Sharpton ran for U.S. Senate in New York in 1994 and came in third in a four-way contest in the Democratic primary with 25 percent of the vote. In 1997, he took 32 percent of the vote in a Democratic mayoral primary.

scary huh?

Spaz, surely Sharpton and his advisors know this. That's why I was asking if there didn't seem to be some ulterior design to this announcement.

Toke, you read my thoughts exactly. While never close, Sharpton and Jackson "parted ways" along time ago. Is Sharpton taking the opportunity to muscle in while Jackson is keeping a low profile due to his personal problems?

Yes, uaru, and Sharpton made sure to point that out in his interview today. I'm not familiar with that race so I have no idea of who the constituency was that made up that 32 percent, but Sharpton claims it was across racial demographics.

Oddish, Rev. Al Sharpton is a self-styled civil rights advocate that has the propensity of turning up whenever there is a racial controversy of some sort. He does have the reputation of a "rabble rouser" and yet I think he is trying to reinvent himself to be accepted into mainstream politics.

Anybody remember the Tawana Brawley case? (I think that was her name).

Oddish,

There are no highlights to this story, LOL. Sharpton's a black minister who rose to public notice about 10 or so years ago when he got involved representing a black girl named Tawana Brawley who claimed to have been raped, abused, and degraded by white cops. It created a major furor in New York -- until it was determined that Brawley had lied about the whole thing. Sharpton was widely criticized for his rabble-rousing during the investigation and for swearing up and down that Brawley had told the truth.

Part of what has made Sharpton such a memorable figure is his appearance. He has lost some weight in the last few years, but he was big as a house and wore his hair in a James Brown pompadour.

In the years since the Brawley incident, Sharpton has insinuated himself into every widely publicized racial incident in New York City -- notably the recent Amadou Diallo shooting, and before that the case of Albert Louima, who was arrested at a bar and brought back to a police station where a policeman named Justin Volpe anally raped him with a broomstick while other cops looked on.

I guess it could be debated whether his involvement helps or harms the victims/causes he represents -- my own opinion is that he capitalizes on these cases and uses them to inflate his own image and to push his own agenda.

He seems to believe he is carrying out Marthin Luther King Jr.'s mission. Maybe he's sincere. I don't know. (I can only speak for myself, and he leaves me with a negative impression.) He likes to engage in public marches and seems to enjoy holding up traffic when he does.

And New Yorkers vote for this guy? LOLOL!

Spaz, today he was asked about the Brawley case, and he claims that the Brawley girl never recanted, and that he still stands behind that case. By the way, the District Attorney who was accused in that case of attacking the girl was absolved and also won a defamation suit against Sharpton. Sharpton claimed today that the jury in that case was biased by the media against him and that he should not have been found guilty of defamation. Yep, he's got alot of baggage for a Presidential candidate.

Have you ever read Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities? The rabble-rousing black reverend in the novel reminds me of none other than Al Sharpton. The thing is, Wolfe wrote the novel some years before Sharpton rose to prominence. It's like life imitating art.

Gawd but I love this country.

Where else can anyone make such a public fool of themselves?

I do hope that when Al takes the Democratic nod in '04 he choses an appropriate running mate. David Duke perhaps?

ROFLMAO.

I'd like to hear jamesoblivion's take on Sharpton since james is a Gothamite, but james seems to be MIA. Anyone know where he is? Last time he was away for a period of ten days, he made a point of letting us know beforehand so we wouldn't wonder. Well, he hasn't posted here since May 5. That's 17 days, and this time he didn't say a word.

Yeah, Sharpton is an opportunistic ass. His candidacy is probably just a bargaining chip for Democratic Party concessions, but he's unstable and egotistical enough to try almost anything.

Wow - nice picture of Sharpton with his hair combed!

Basically I don't think he could even carry one state in an election - unless, of course he paid off Jebby to give him Florida.

Hey - it's not like it hasn't been done before
