What foods do you love that disgust others? I consider myself rather tame. I'll try most things at least once but I won't make them a favorite just because of their uniqueness. Here are 3 items I do/did love but they do disgust my wife.

Buttermilk, while my wife will cook with it, she makes a horrid face when I get a glass. Whole milk, skim milk, and chocolate milk I can pass on, but a cold, cold, glass of buttermilk is really a great treat for me. I've never had a container of buttermilk spoil in my fridge, I drink it too fast.

Pig skins, my wife cringes when I purchase these, one of the best things about them is she won't put her digging hands in the bag. There is a local brand that has salt and vinegar flavor, they are my absolute favorite.

Oysters on the half shell, with some hot sauce and horseradish these were a real treat. I say 'were' because I've sworn never to eat them again. Earlier this year I ate some and about 4 hours later I got sick, I mean scary sick, my skin turned dry and clammy and I turned white as a sheet. I spent an hour laying in the middle of the floor telling my wife to mop my face with a wet cloth and arguing with her against calling the ambulance, even though I privately wondered if I might be having a heart attack. I recovered but the memory will have me passing up on what was one of my favorite treats for a long, long time.

Maybe someone can give me a replacement suggestion for the oysters.

My wife will throw buttermilk out if I leave some in the frig and I have gotten upset with her. I have told her it was still good but she asks how you can tell - to her it seems bad new.
There is no was to be safe on raw shellfish. Even before pollution the were a risk.
When I was a boy you could go down to the docks in North Carolina and tie a doller bill around the handle of a bushal basket and throw it down to the oyster boat and the guy would fill it with a big coal shovel and have a kid run it up to you. Boy I miss that. If you could enjoy them fried it is a lot less risky.
I love the sticky little steamed dumplings in dim sum, but nobody else in the family likes them.

I love to dip french fries in a combination of mayonnaise and barbeque sauce. My family and friends always cringe when I ask for it in a restaurant, but the waitresses tell me it's not that unusual.

I also love ranch dressing (the kind you mix at home from a packet with mayo and milk and seasoning). I have actually been known to mix up a batch and then drink it (i didn't plan to do it in advance, but I taste-tested it and it was SOOOO good!)

Then there's raw biscuit dough (the whack them on the counter type). LOVE it.

Needless to say, I don't indulge in these very often, but they fit the bill for disgusting others on the rate occasions when I indulge.

Bananas and hot fudge.

My boss loved mayonnaise and peanut butter sandwiches. When we'd chaperone a group of students, he'd assign me to make him sandwiches while he drove the bus. It took a lot of will power not to throw up on his bread.

yup, I'm guilty of that also. When my wife makes cookies it is a race to see if she can cook them faster than I can eat the cookie dough.

Peanut butter and honey on toast, which is kinda healthy, but friends look at me like I am mad.

These others I try to eat as infrequently as possible, but love them all the same:

Peppermint ice cream or frozen custard.

French fries dipped in tartar sauce.

Fried bologna and cheese sandwiches, with the bologna burnt just so to a crisp in the center and edges and the bread toasted in a skillet, so the cheese melts and gets gooey.

Grilled cheese sandwichs with strawberry jam in the middle.

Salsa on scrambled eggs.

Fried egg, bacon and sliced tomato, drizzled with slaw dressing on toasted bread.

Despite this, I am actually a very good cook

The grilled cheese with strawberry jam was always good to scare people off at work. I also like them with honey.
Other than that, I don't think I gross anyone out.

I'm also a fried bologna fan, but I prefer mine with fried eggs.

Also, SPAM and eggs, SPAM and cheese, SPAM and just about anything. (I'm even thinking of entering a SPlasanga at the Manly Man Festival this year.)

Chocolate chip cookies and beer.

Some raw fish. Squid prepared almost any way.

I used to love raw hamburger also, but I'm too paranoid to eat it now.

Chicken liver omelettes.

Pickle juice works, too - but not quite as disgusting!

Sadie999 - Spam is BIG among the native Hiwaiians. Especially for breaskfast.
Never could get up the nerve to eat chitlin's.

What are chitlans?

Chitlins are the intestines of a pig prepared for eating. If you are driving through a neighborhood and you smell something disgusting and you aren't near a waste treatment plant you may be near a home that is preparing chitlins. I've known of people that like them but won't cook them in their home because of the smell.

What about those HUGE beef tongues you see in plain view at the grocery store? Is that sick or what?

Imagine.... you have a bunch of friends over for dinner, and out you come from the kitchen with a big platter of beef tongues....."Dinner's ready folks!"......

uaru....that's unbelieveable. Double yuck!!

dill pickle & maynonaise sandwiches on buttermilk wonder bread

fried green tomatoes

whole black olives, entire can- eaten directly out of the can, must be icy cold

stewed tomatoes, cornbread, and manyonaise smashed in drinking glass and eaten with a spoon (haven't had that in a long time!)

french fries dipped in sour cream

Something called "Twang" Pickle Flavor. It's intended as a beer salt I think. I eat it directly from the package, no beer.

I HATE rootbeer, and marshmallow cream, and chocolate mixed with bread (cake, ding dongs) is totally disgusing.

A few years ago, I worked as Chef at a "Retirement Community", and believe it or not, we served toungue once evry month!! The folks loved it!! Food from their youth (comfort food) was toungue...these folks grew up during the depression....My Mom used to make a Toungue Salad (like a Tuna or Chicken Salad) and it was quite good on crackers in small amounts....

Muskrat
Crow (literally)
Mudhen


Racoon tastes like PORK, NOT chicken..lots of fat...Muskrat was rather gamey...Crow was "wild" bird flavored with no over-riding pros or cons...and Mudhen was better if one ate the featrhers that were oringinally on it!!!

Menudo is popular in the southwest. Recipe: Take one large stewpot and fill with water brought to a simmer. For one week, throw all of your waste into it-meat scraps, potato peels, leftovers. On Friday, add chilis and serve. All of the Mexican restaurants serve this as their specialty once a week. Nuff said?

Mountain oysters are a real delicacy, if you know how to prepare them correctly-there's a trick to it. When we castrate calves, we have a waiting list for them.

There was one food I refused to try despite repeated attempts by a good natured Eskimo. Whale blubber, it looked like a block of pink tofu and stink, man that stuff did stink! This kid ate it like it was candy. When the kid put it in the microwave to warm it up he emptied the break room. I got hot about it and the kid just laughed, he even laughed harder after he placed a piece on the engine of my truck. 40 below and I had to roll down the windows.

The kid gave new meaning to the term "chew the fat."

Fried black-eyed pea patties.

Corn meal battered fried turnips.

(If it's battered, fried, and plant in origin, I will eat it... but not beets.
Never ate a beet. Never. Beet virgin.)

French fries dipped in soft serve ice cream (the kind you get in a McDonald's sundae). Very yummy!

I also love peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Someone mentioned earlier that they liked peanut butter and honey on toast. I must have had a strange upbringing as this was considered normal to my friends and I growing up

jt - Why would you eat beets? Beets are not food. I have been telling the wife for years they are a decorative garnish.

I don't care for racoon or groundhog but bear is pretty good if you cookit like duck or goose to let all the fat drip off.

I went to a wedding reception once (this was a long time back in Chicago) where I was given a plate full of food. I'm munching away and I ask my hubby what is this stuff on this corner of the plate. He says, I'm not going to tell you until we get home". You guessed it, it was chitlins and they weren't bad, but I've never had them since.

Love liver and onions. Seems to be a food you love or hate-no middle ground. I think that's because it has to be cooked just right.

Well, gotta go get some peanut buter and honey on toast now that somebody reminded me!
