I am sure this has been asked before sometime but since I do not read these threads on a daily basis, would like to know. Also is the zip code factored in on the mailing cost?

Magazines cannot be shipped bookrate because they contain advertising. I believe the charges are based upon weight only, in the U.S. Rates are getting ready to go up, effective Jan. 7, even for bookrate. The new rate will be $1.30 for the first pound, instead of $1.13.

I did not know that. I sent quite a few 1930s magazines bookrate last year and even told the postal clerk they were old time magazines.

They can be sent via "Bound Printed Matter". BPM is zip-code (zone) dependent, unlike Book Rate (now Media) mail. Sometimes it's cheaper than book rate and sometimes it isn't, depending on where it's going. In reality, your chances of getting caught sending magazines via book rate mail rather than Bound Printed Matter are pretty small.

I think the new media rate will fix some ofthese troulbes as this will include books magazinesand other things as I under stand it.
But At tis point technically magzines or any printed media with advertizeing is not supose to go but I am sure it sliped through plenty over the years. http://www.Dman-N-Company.com

Hi
I asked this question just last week and the answer I was given by the postmaster was no, because of the dated advertisement, he said anything 2-3 years old or older should be safe to ship book rate because the advertisement should be outdated. Keep in mind that is what he related to me, I did not see anything in writing.
I just shipped a bunch of 60’s magazines at book rate, the postal employees were aware and had no concern.

I've asked this same question of my postmaster and he didn't know the answer. I emailed the manager of our postal district office and he says NO - magazines (no matter how old) cannot be shipped by Book Rate (now called Media Mail). They have to go First Class, Priority Mail, Parcel Post or Bound Printed Matter. You may not get caught, but if you do it is considered mail fraud. The postal service has the right to open your package and see what you are shipping on Book Rate classification. You just need to make the judgment call - do you want to take that chance? I don't think I want to, so starting January 2, 2001 I am shipping all my old magazines by Bound Printed Matter and books by Media Mail. If my high bidders complain I will tell them to take it up with the Postal Service as they are the ones who made those rules.
