With the postal rates changing next week (for example Priority going up to $3.50 for one pound and $3.95 for two), is it fair for a seller to pass along the additional costs to those buyers who have not yet paid for auctions they've won, or do we get stuck with the additional costs? My feeling is that if the buyer had a week or two to make payments and did not, it's reasonable for me to contact them and tell them they must add on the additional costs if their payment is received after January 7th. How do others feel about this?

If you did not put a disclaimer in you TOS or EOA and the postmark is within your stated time frame for payment, then NO you should not charge extra. If they did not pay within your TOS, then it is negotiable.

I agree. For the past few weeks in my EOA email to my bidders, I stated something like "any payments received AFTER 1/3/01 will be subject to the new postal rates". My auctions also state payment is due within 10 days. On Saturday I had 300 auctions close. I gave the new shipping rates in my EOA email. I also stated something like "if you will be paying this invoice ONLINE by 1/3 you can use the old shipping rates".
No problems so far... but after 1/3/01 will be the real test.

If you listed the rate in your auction it is against ebays rule to change after the sale is complete it would be best to revise the listings that have no bids and maybe try to email bidders before the Auction closes about the postage rate or just eat the difference.
Some buyer are very good and many even add in the .30 or .45 cent difference.
I changed my rates from actual shipping to a fixed shipping in november fixed rate had the new rate figured in for pracel post and frist class and have had no problems or complaints.

Now if I can only get my international buyers to READ and understand the notice in my auctions that shipping outside of the U.S. costs MORE! I can't believe how many think that a two pound item going to Japan or Sweden or wherever still costs $3.20. Usually they're good about sending the difference once I explain it, but it just seems simple logic to me that it won't cost the same as it does in the U.S. Sometimes I've had to eat the difference because it might just be 80 cents (like to Canada) and by the time Paypal takes their chunk it's not worth haggling over.

I am not going to get myself all worked up about when they bought, when they will pay, how they will pay, they didn't pay enough, etc.
The hassle and feuding just isn't worth it to me. I will eat a few increases, that's for sure, but if my profit margin was so slim as to hurt me I would have to think ebay is not for me.

Before the end of the year, I listed that any bid placed AFTER January 6, Midnight, would reflect New Postal Rates, that way there will be no doubt. Gosh Shosh!

I started posting this two weeks ago "just in case" no complaints yet for auctions paid for. I always state shipping as well.
CUSTOMERS please note Priority rates go up in the beginning of January. I do not mark up shipping. Sorry for any inconvenience.
