My mom is downsizing. It seems to go in stages so I'm not sure if I've posted these items here before. If I have I apologize. I hope one of our resident experts here might have some information on one or both of these items. The first is a glass dish that was received as a wedding gift in 1959. The second is an assortment of child's dishes that she was given piece by piece as a child, probably about 1945. She called the dishes Pumpkinhead and I haven't found any info on childrens dishes with that name. Any info would be helpful as she either wants me to try and sell them for her or she's going to put them in her yard sale.

Also does anyone know if Ebay allows the sale of old fashioned straight razors (with the handle)? Is there a market for them?

Hi berkeley,

The bear is spelled Punkinhead and if you do a search for Merrythought bears, Punkinhead you may find some. I sold a Punkinhead book last year that was a gift from Eaton's Store in the 1940's and I did very well with it.

The glass piece may be Chalet? Is it from Canada?

The last time I looked straight razors were still for sale on ebay.

Edited to say please don't put the Punkinhead dishes on a yard sale!

shanni...thank you! Yes the glass is from Canada. I don't believe there were any makers marks but I can get her to double check. I don't want her to yard sale anything, so they came to visit for Easter and left a bunch of stuff with me.

Edited to ask if I should sell the tea set separately or together?

Some of the Chalet glass has the word "Chalet" etched into the bottom. There was also a company in Alberta that did art glass called Altaglass but it does not seem to be as high a quality. I have noticed that certain pieces are "sick" and after sitting on a shelf for awhile they get an almost oily feel to them.

Punkinhead was distributed only through Eatons in Canada I believe. There are also collectors in Japan for it.

I would sell the tea set together I think. I have no idea how many are still out there?

My advice is to sell the Punkinhead set as one lot. I would also list it in both Collectibles: Dolls & Bears, as well as in Pottery & Glass:Pottery:Childrens Dishes

Make sure to use Merrythought Punkinhead in the title. It should do well.

FYI - Everyone knows Altaglass is superior to Chalet.

So Chalet and Altaglass are both from Alberta? That would make sense as we are from Alberta. Is Altaglass perhaps another Medicine Hat product like the crocks?

No, Chalet was made down East.
AltaGlass is from Medicine Hat AB.

Chalet will usually be acid etched marked on the bottom. Altaglass same, but sometimes just came with a foil sticker.

Chalet glass was made in Cornwall, Ontario. I think it was done by three Italian glassmakers. They couldn't stand the long Canadian winters so moved back to Italy. I find more unmarked pieces than the acid etched ones. Prices on ebay have risen in the past couple of years.

My Mom used to collect Chalet and Altaglass and it was my job to dust it. That is how I learned about the superiority of Chalet.

Alberta's best product is Medalta pottery.
