I am worried I have become forgetful. I cannot find the item I sold.
I can find everything else BUT that.
Gosh, with business so slow this is terrible.
Will a refund be enough? I am afraid the bidder will neg me.

I "lose" items all the time! Which is why I like to start my packing a.s.a.p., long before the money shows up - it gives me a fighting chance. So far, I've never had to void a sale - always found the item, usually in the process of looking for something else.

don't panic we have all done it (well most of us anyway)
Can we assume that the item is misplaced rather than lost ? I mean its still around your house somewhere

Whan this has happend to me I email the seller offer a refund or tell them I misplaced it and will ship as soon as I can Find it

I have never had a buyer ask for refund they have all understood after a week or so I would repeat tell them you still haven't found it offer refund or let them wait
At three weeks if you still havent found it I would refund but promise to contact them when it shows up.
spock here...... TILL NOV 1 ANYWAY

That happens to me once in a while. Everybody has been very nice about it and I just issue a refund. Things happen sometimes.

This has happened to me more than once. It most often happens on relists. I think I will try the item again and it may be several months later and the item is still in my computer, right?

But in the meantime it has travelled from one room to another, from one box to another, sometimes to my shop and back.

Those are usually always the items that they pay for the very next second with Billpoint when I am hoping for a snail mail check.

So far I have found them all except for one giftware item that sold for $4.99. She was so excited to find it! The supplier was near enough for me to order a new caseload of 48. But I never wanted to see anymore of those things.

I have done this also. I find that the more I look, the more I panic & that doesn't help at all. Describe it to a family member, let them look. That works for me, I am usually frantically looking so hard I pass right over the item, but DH can usually find it in minutes.

It happens to all of us at one time or another. Or selling something we've forgotten we've already sold. Or breaking something as we are getting ready to pack it.

Mercifully, most buyers are disappointed but kindly understanding. The best thing is to confess right up front & throw yourself on their mercy.

Try:

Dear Understanding Buyer,

Excellent customer service is one of my key goals. Therefore, it is with extreme regret that I must admit that, when I went to pack your purchase for shipping, I was unable to find it. I have searched my entire house several times but it appears I may have accidentally irretrievably lost this item.

I do sincerely apologize for this mistake & know this will be a great disappointment for you. If I had any way to locate another, I would gladly do so but this was my only one.

Again, I can only offer my sincerest apologies for my mistake.

With regrets,
Sad Seller

Hopefully they'll understand. But if they don't, keep any emails professional. Admit your mistake, offer apologies but don't get defensive. They have a right to be disappointed but if you're lucky, they'll understand it happens.

Good luck.

I did something like this. Listed sheet music and didn't notice 'til it was sold that the inside pages were missing. Refunded money, buyer was understanding. The irony was the the title of the sheet music was "You Can't Have It All"

I once thought I'd lost an item, so I forced myself to visually inspect every single thing in my ebay area. Turns out I had a wrong "image" of the item in my head--it was sitting there all the time, and I just overlooked it, expecting it to be different somehow!

It happens to everyone, I think. Don't panic, just keep looking. It will probably turn up.

This happened to me last week, I lost a book that I sold on Half.com. I still can't find it. I was so frustrated about NOT finding it I thought I was overlooking it. I went through every single book in my upstairs...not an easy task. I have no idea where it went. I know that I did not double sell it because I don't have books listed anywhere else other than half.com...it's here in my house somewhere and someday I'm going to come across it.

It was the first time it happened to me though, hopefully the last.
