OK.... I've had enough I have a Polaroid PDC 700 Camera and I can't get true colors for greens & blues......I'm buying myself a new camera for Christmas. Although I love the way my Polaroid is easy to use. It has soft ware for croping pictures and blowing them up and changeing the tint on the pictures (except greens & blues) It's time to buy a new one I'm spending to much time retakeing pictures......../Someone suggested a Sony Mavica !!!Are they easy to use? Does it have croping features? Does it take a genious to learn to run it? (I might be in trouble there) Is it expensive? What camera would you suggest in the $250.00-$400.00 price range?

Actually from the sound of your complaints it might not be your camera you are disatisfied with but your pohot editing program

Why go out and buy a new $500 camera for want of a new image program !!!

sony mavica is very popular,i have an older one which does not zoom and it is not good, you must get one which zooms.
prices of a good sony mavica in the 7x series can be had for under 400 on yahoo warehouse or sam club.
the good part about sony mavica is the floppy disk, you take your pictures on the floppy disk and then insert into your pc hard drive.
the software for editing you have to pay extra for,the one which comes with it does not have all the features,at least that was my case, may be now they are included.
bad part of the sony is that it is bulky,it is like you are holding 2 big thick ruben sandwich with sauerkraut, pastrami, rye bread slices .
if you can figure what is wrong with your edit software, you save money until sony or whoever comes up with a better one.

I have a sony mavica and love it. I've had it for about 3 years. Cost is $500. I love the fact you use floppy disc. CHEAP!!! But I have to say I have never tried cropping. It is SO easy to upload pictures in ebay. The software you get is photo studio. Don't know a thing about any of the other brands.

I have had several brands including Kodac, Sony and a few others. The Sony is the BEST for quality and ease of use in the price range. If I needed another I buy another Sony Mavica. I truely love it. Cindy

From what I have been told it's not my software its the polaroid camera itself. I love the software. The problem is when I take the origional picture the greens and navy blues come out black or a off color. I have tried changeing every setting, lights, distance, flash, I turn on lamps turn off lamps open the curtains close the curtains, go outside stay inside, nothing works on those two colors to get the tint right. Its tough to try and sell a dress when the picture looks like it is black and it's really green. Today I took a picture of a navy blue pinstripe suite..It kept comeing out brown.I would change all of the setting and lighting and it comes out black. No happy medium. Thanks for the information I think I will check out the Sony Mavica a little closer. The one I looked at today was $399.99 at Sam's Club. It looks like it has a lot of gadgets to learn how to run. I guess every new camera looks that way when you first get it.

dont mean to sound petty, the last i look at sam 's mavica 7x series ,it is under 399.99.
you can also go to yahoo warehouse,a few big sellers are in there selling there for a little less,no sales tax but shipping can be quite high by ups.
if you do a search on sony mavica ,all the sites will come up,sony also has a website,it sells refurbished ones but they go fast.
so you like holding 2 reuben sandwich with pastrami, sauerkraut on 4 pieces of dark rye bread?
i forget there is another ingredient,is it melted cheese ??

It is bigger than some but it feels really good in your hands. It is not hard to learn to use at all. We sent one to our daughter in Doha,Qatar without instructions (just our written instructions) and she had no problems. It cost us $102 to mail it and ups wanted more later. They said there was a mistake and we owed more. Needless to say we did not pay more. You will love the camera!!!

Just a thought for anyone interested....This weeks sales flyer at Target has a Sony Mavica for $349.99. Features: 10x optical zoom, 640 x 480 vga resolutiona and 2.5" color lcd display using 3.5" floppy disk. AND if I remember correctly they are offering free shipping at their website (and wouldn't that also mean out of staters would not have to pay tax??)

It was listed as a 399.99 camera.

Sony Mavica. I bought the FD 73 about a year ago because of the advice from members of this board. Not for one second have I been sorry, it's a wonderful camera & very, very easy to use. You will hardly ever use an editing program, it does such a good job there is really no need. You will love using the floppy disks.

Check Amazon, I saw something about free shipping, but don't know if it covers cameras.

Squinting my eyes really hard to read:

10 x optical zoom
mvc-fd75
quick access fd drive 2x

Is this a good camera?? Better than the FD70??

My brother has a new HP he wants to sell me for the same price. It has taken over 200 pics on the same batteries and download from camera to the computer for 70 plus pics took about 3-4 minutes.

Is this comparable? Better??

Most importantly, as an AW auction launcher, pics cannot exceed 350K.
Will the FD75 cut down pics, is the program that comes with it easy to use for this etc.
My current Kodak I can't even find a way to resize my pics! So I retake them!

if i want a camera which is better than fd73,what should i buy?
i use it to take pictures to sell in cyberspace, small items mostly but sometimes figurines of 14 inches.
also i like to sell nice jewelry, not diamond but nice pieces.
so i would like to buy a camera for nicer pictures than fd73 for nice collectibles and jewelry, what do you folks recommend??

Hi

Sony Mavica all the way.
I love mine and use it all the time.

Editing is easy with Arc Software.

If you want to print photos you do have to settle for 4x6. The ones that I have printed came out very good.

For auctions, Sony with the floppy discs is the way to go.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

I have the FD73 Sony Mavica and there is no problem with your picture size when uploading. They usually are around 53 to 57.
On the quality of your small items pics. you can play around with your background and get good pictures. Also I don't know what you mean by having to settle for 4x6 printed pictures jeffj318. I have printed many pictures all sizes. The photo Studio software came with mine so maybe that is the difference?

sony cybershot?is that a sony new model??
professional do not regard sony as a good camera, not for professional use.
if one is willing to pay more than 500 for a good camera for professional results like those you see in mail order catalog(except for cyberspace ) what kind of camera is good?

I have a Sony Mavica after suffering along with an old casio - The Mavica is a breeze to use and the quality of your pics is excellent- The best money Ive spent ! - Floresent lighting tends to mess with your colors - Cool white bulbs make everything bluer but you can add some red with your photo edit software to fix it. Full spectrum daylights are best or you can go outside to shoot. The file size - you can choose between 3 qualitys on the camera - you can also go into photo edit and erase the background cutting the file size way down. You can take very nice ready to use photos right out of the box - If moneys a problem you can learn how to fix your poloroid photos with the edit software IP deluxe or photo editor or similar - It takes some playing to learn how to do it.
Good Luck
Ed

dont use regular white bulbs, use the clear glass bulbs called crystal clear made by ge,you can find them where you find the regular light bulbs, they cost more.

amzn has every camera on sale,i just looked into sony dsc-f505v cybershot digital camera and its reviews by customers.
sounds like it is superior to the fd version-a lens which is good enough for professional photographers, wide angle, etc.
needs to buy extra memory sticks, battery etc.
cicuit city has it for 799 and amzn offers free shipping, used section has like new ones ranging from under 600 to over 1000 with extras.check it out.
also many fd sony as well..
read the reviews,i have found them helpful.
if you already have a so so camera, the next upgrade could be the cybershot.

I was prepared to buy a Mavica on the advice of a professional (appraiser of antique musical instruments - he can get appraisals from Sothebys' and Christies based on a pic taken with a Mavica, that says something!).

Anyway, the reason I went for the cybershot (new Sony model, will eventually replace Mavica) is that the picture taking time is faster. Mavica has to write the pics to the disk and that slows the process down. We take about 1500 (one thousand five hundred!!!) pictures per week-end so speed was a consideration.

The quality is fabulous and we photograph hard items (antique linens, often white on white - very hard), have a look at our pics if you want to see the results (my id is the same as here).

It's not a cheap camera but it was a great buy and there is hardly any editing ever needed, including on damask which is a very hard fabric to show on pictures. We added a 64mb chip so can take nearly 1,000 at one time. Upload via USP port takes 5 minutes for the 1,000 pics, can't beat that!

I love My mavica fd95! Also if you arre looking for a program to adjust colors, the absolute best one I have found is AcDsee. I bought the series a year ago and it has been indispensible!

touchofeurope-
i saw your auction of laces and linens,it is hard to tell from your items how the cybershot is any better than the mavica.
no offense,is there any item which is non linen, like porcelain or bronze?
also if time is not of essence, wont a scanner do a better job, scanner is know to do excellent job on displaying fine fine details

if cybershot is going to replace fd cameras, then the prices of all fd will keep dropping!!!!
i like the fd disk concept, there are just too many cables and wires by my pc???

I don't think the Cybershot is any better than the Mavica as far as quality goes, I think they are the same. The technology is the same, the only reason we bought the cybershot is because of speed, not quality compared to Mavica.

I can't use a scanner for the same reasons, we need the speed and flexibility of the camera, we can do angles, change lighting etc..

I do have other items than linens up, they are mixed in the lots, usually ending at 5.30 PM PST - all grouped.

But seriously, Mavica is just as good. The only issue is writing the images to disk which is a problem when you take the volume we do.

there are customer reviews on the cybershot camera on amzn, some of the reviews are from professional photographer who like the lens and wide angle.
i have an older mavica which is no longer made and it does not zoom,it does not do a good job with any item which has to be shot at a distance.
so i am looking to upgrade,i dont want a fd73 as there is really not a big improvement over mine except for the zoom feature,i was hoping cybershot is my answer.
what kind of camera does jeweler use??

Jewelery sellers in Europe I know and and antique musical instrument expert both swear by newer Mavicas - Cybershot is wonderful, we love it - it was expensive (the 75, the one we have, is 700$), but the quality is just great for detail work.

I too have a Mavica FD75 and just love it. The only problem I have is the overpowering flash. I have found that if I put a piece of transparent tape over the flash it tones it down and the pics come out even better. I have been scanning most of my jewelry photos since they come out the best that way. Also I have just bought a Fuji finepix 2300 on ebay for $160 and it takes very good pics and also has a macro for closeups that works pretty well. It connects by USB port and is pretty quick on uploading. If you get a Flashpath then you can download pics via the floppy drive. I use Adobe Photodeluxe 2.0 for editing and it is great for cropping, sizing and reducing resolution if needed.
