Glassgrl: you can always go back to AOL - try something radical - do DSL or cable Bellsouth has it - you will be amazed at how much time you save and never worry about being bumpped or timmed out again. I love my dsl

I use Verizon DSL - Lots of choices besides AOL. I thought about telocity around the same time they were having problems, and decided that going with a 3rd party provider was not the way to go. Chances of Verizon going out of business is pretty slim, I won't take the chance. Sorry to hear about this, it will affect all of us as there are 3.7 Million subscribers that may be suddenly without access.

I'm with you, glassgrl, expecting my @home cable to go down any second.
I'd really hate to go back to dial-up. Think I'll try and use DSL until Charter's new cable comes in.
I hope it's soon.

my town is so small we don't have dsl. and I've already heard from someone that has Bellsouth.net that it's just as slow as regular dial up sometimes. sigh. You would think someone would want all of us as customers, wouldn't you?

What's wrong with AOL. I'm on AOL, have never tried anything else. Am I missing something? And, what would make another ISP better & I'm talking about dial up, not DSL or cable. I'm beginning to think I should try something else.

By the way glassgrl, I do stained glass too, copper foil, Tiffany style. Haven't done much since I found the internet though. I used to be able to buy supplies wholesale with an account of a friend who had a ceramic shop, but it's been so long since I ordered that I would have to qualify all over again & my friend no longer has the shop, so I'm stuck. This is one tough hobby to buy wholesale. They want all kinds of proof that you are a business, tax #, yellow pages ad, business card, stationary etc, & there are very few places that sell stained glass & supplies retail.

mcjane: I have never EVER missed my AOL since switching to cable modem. Configuring outlook mail was the hardest thing about switching, but after about 10 minutes, even that was 100 times better, even though you don't get to put the little smiley face in your letters anymore, we make do the old fashioned way

I mainly do stained glass leaded windows. copper foil is too tedious to me since I don't work in a paid shop anymore. my boss had a foiling machine that was like a sewing machine, electric automatic foot pedal operated. try finding one of those on the market!
but my boss got divorced, closed up shop and sold me everything I wanted in glass and then gave me 20 boxes of lead came! She kept everything that was essential to starting back up shop, she just didn't want to have to move the glass and bevels. then we moved from alabama to florida, we live in a condo, and my shop aka *playhouse* is 20 miles away at my other house, and I haven't had a chance to do much since we've been here and Ebay too. So I haven't had to order anything, I've got enough glass and lead for a long long time.
Otherwise, I'm looking into www://McGillsGlass.com in California, except for the first order, you have to buy $100. worth, but that would be no problem. They have the cheapest prices I've seen.

glassgrl,
My sympathies. I'm on excite right now and the plug hasn't been pulled, even though 11/30 was the last day, supposedly.

Seems to me there are two questions - access method to the internet of various hi speed types mentioned already - dsl, another cable provider, dish (that's always available i think) or some lo speed dog like AOL or whatever. The other question is ISP and there AOL wouldn't be my first choice either, but if they'll connect you hi speed, do it. Think also about getting a dish if there isn't something/anything else you can do that's hi speed access. I think the particular ISP is a lot less important than the technology used to connect you.

I have @home through Cox. They are the only game in town and I don't know what I'd do without them. I have a dial-up account that I use for my laptop outside of my home, but there is no way I could use that full time. I don't even think I have a modem for any of my PC's. I hope they get something worked out before I end up back into the stone age.

I just realized that I never even got notice from Cox that there was an issue. Maybe they are hoping no one would prematurely drop them.

I got a notice from Charter/Excite and appreciated the fact that they were up front about a possible loss of service. Really, I have no complaints about Excite (except that they are associated at least in my mind to the evil MS of Redmond, WA).

I'm actually hoping that Excite does find some way to keep servicing their accounts, even though I'm moving over to the second hi-speed provider in town which happens to be the city - believe that or not. I'm especially hoping they stay in biz for the next 9 days until my new service is hooked up...

I bot my cable modem to replace the one that Excite had cheerfully provided over a year ago, free along with free installation - two guys for 4 hours. Really been a pretty decent service and I think I'd slash my wrists before going back to dialup.

OK4LEATHER- That's what cable is.....always on, never timmed out, etc.

It's just faster than most DSL and costs less money.

And for "what's wrong with AOL?"...nothing at all is wrong with AOL. It's just that those kind of accounts hook up at a speed of, say 56k. Cable hooks up at 1,500k. You can do a lot more things with that kind of ability.

I've been shopping for an alternative since the notices went out, but in my area even the satelite connection doesn't rate as good as cable.

It's really kind of funny, how many of us got really spoiled on $31.00 a month cable and now it's gone.....now we have to go with slower internet and pay more money....kind of wrecked our little internet experience.

I think I'll go lay across the railroad tracks for the rest of the day.

AOL is a curse. Too many ads, incompatability with many applications on the web. I am a webmaster and when people call with problems with AOL, I tell them they are SOL.

Yes, cable modem is faster than DSL, but cable can slow down a lot when too many people are on simultaneously. That problem doesn't occur with DSL. Either one is world's better than dialup.

I kind of hate to jump in here, but I get no "ads" or popups with aol. I have found it to be a blessing rather that a curse. But then I am just a user for about 10 hours a day. Guess I have AOL's tuning, usage and features down extra well.

Do a Google search for a low cost dial up if you don't want cable or DSL. I found one dial up for $14.95 a month with unlimited access.
