Last Sunday I boxed an item to ship to New York (I'm in Indiana). Medium size box, six pounds.
Checked the USPS site and Priority Mail without DC or insurance was $8+.
Went to the FedEx site, put in the destination, weight, and measurements, and the cost for FedEx ground came to $4.94 with conformation and $100 insurance.
Opened an account online, paid with CC, printed out the shipping lable, and dropped it off at the terminal Monday morning.
Wednesday afternoon I got an email confirming delivery and a link to click to see who signed for it.
Adios, USPS. If I can get this kind of service at a cheaper price, no standing in line, no jacka$$ clerks...I'm outa here!

In the last 3 or 4 months, I've used FedEx a lot. Their rates have made it possible to sell heavy items that would be prohibitive for a customer to pay through the postal service. I've never had a complaint or damaged item with them (knock on wood). With the new zone based rates the P.O. is adopting in June, I will probably be using them a lot more. I haven't opened an account yet, so the shipping procedure is nearly identical to what I do at the Post Office. The efficiency and professionalism of FedEx vs the P.O. is quite apparent, even on the first visit. It looks like I'll be opening an account very soon.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.
