Does the word "ticking" refer to a fabric
type or to a pattern -- the typical stripes/stripes flowers? Some items described as "ticking" seem to have fabric that is denim-like and others sheet-like. Appreciate comments. Thanks.

I sew a lot...ticking is the heavy material striped blue and white (is what I use) for making my feather pillows. Hope this helps some.

I think ticking is the type of fabric (what they used to sew a cover for a "tick" as a homemade mattress). The "ticking stripe" (the blue or red stripe with the fine stripes next to it) was made in lighter fabric than ticking all the time, though - and we've seen lots of ticking in different patterns, or in a solid cream color, which nobody seems to want at all!

Hi, the above is correct made for bedding, however, the railroad industry adapted this denim stripe for railroad employees for hats and trim because of its durability, the pattern is still being used in a lighter ounce denim for trim and also for the back of vests, for design, in other items.
