With all the hoopla about new rates, I have found a site where you can create a box in your auction ad that a customer can insert their 3 digit prefix and determine shipping cost via Priority Mail. You can also add handling to this. It is a pretty cool and efficient html code that is auto generated for you. I found this on the OTWA board by the poster Mr.B.

When going to the link I will post below, if he does not already have your prefix set up, a pop up box sends him an email asking that you set up a calculator for your area. I did it today and within 2 hours he had my area set up.

Since I am not UBB friendly, I will post the link here and hopefully one of the posters will provide the UBB link.

Oh by the way, this is Free. Hope this helps with this new postal increase.

Looks good and worked good. However, when I copied and pasted the code to the html editor, it didn't look like it should nor would it work. Dang it!

I put it into my Auction Watch listings that are launching tomorrow night and it worked great for me.

He did mention if you have Java turned off, it wouldn't display right - Do you have it turned off?

I like the way it give both Priority AND Parcel Post rates.

It doesn't include my zip code, but I e-mailed it to him.

I'm not crazy about the idea of telling buye's the shipping charges. Right now in the ad, I put the weight and mention that Priority Mail is now zoned and I will calculate the shipping when the buyer sends me their address.

It might kill sales if they knew it costs $8.55 to send 3 pounds to zone 8 (California) from Detroit.

Eventually they will find out and Mail order business will be hurt.

And still, the clerks in my PO wrap and tape and show off stamps while the line streches to the door....

zzy... Maybe I don't understand what you meant? Why wouldn't you want them to get an estimate of what it would cost? They are going to find out sooner or later and I would prefer they had the opportunity to find out before they bid.

You are correct, it is zoned - by their zip code. Once you set this calculator up, their zip code is entered at the auction screen and they get an idea of what it might cost to ship it to them. It also states that insurance is not included in the pop-up and further instructs them to not send payment until they have heard from the seller.

Your statement that it will hurt sales if they find out it costs $8.35 to send a 3 lb. package makes no sense to me. If a bidder finds out later the cost, they tend to either delay in sending their payment or just not do it at all because they did not know what it would cost to ship to them. I prefer less hassles with buyers. However, you most likely have a system that works for you & I do understand some of your reasoning as to why it hurts bids, for the impulse shoppers.

Why on earth would you send a 3 pound package priority mail? Zone 8 shipping is only $6.48 parcel post. That is from memory so I may be a few cents off.

I easily went into the Javascript and edited the pop-up box. I took out "usps" because my buyers mistook that for UPS. I shortened and simplified the message according to my needs. The buyers gets confused with too much wording and tend to delay payment or send e-mails that say, "just give me the total."

Mark (Mr.B) has answered each e-mail I've sent and is putting out an updated version in 24 hours. The new one will have a default for "unidentified" zips. Right now it shows "blank" if an unknown zip is keyed in. He appreciates feedback from us so he can improve his model.

I think I will switch to his calculator from the "concho" version when it is all done.
It will be worth a fee once a year to have Mark do all the rate increases instead of going through this again. In 2 years, USPS will be applying for another rate hike. Yikes! The people at the counter are really grumpy, I hate going in.

(so ends the 1st epistle of alwaysbroke)

The reason I'm not interested in saving the customer $2 on shipping 3 lbs to California is:
1) I don't like having to buy or scrounge dumpsters for boxes: Priority mail provides the boxes.

2) Delivery confirmation is free with Priority mail using the internet web site of USPS

3) Parcel Post ground to Zone 9 can easily take a week, whereas Priority takes usually 2 or 3 days.

Can you explain point two, or provide a website?
Navigating the USPS site is a little frustrating!
Thanks in advance!
