This mark is on the bottom of a heart-shaped box...I think it dates from the turn of the century. Can anyone tell me if it's pewter or maybe silver? I'm attaching a photo of the box as well...Thanks for any help!

It always helps to type the address correctly!

On jewelry, the mark 800 indicates the metal is 80% silver. I have a hunch that this 400 mark on this piece means the metal is 40% silver.

It is probably Victorian and it needs new Silver plating. Back in those days most everything was silver or silverplate and they cleaned it alot. Can't make out the initials. did you enter the initials into the replacements search box? Well maybe sanmar will be along and he might know.

I couldn't make out the initials/marks that are above the "400." Hopefully, someone will recognize the shape of the logo. This belonged to the great-grandmother of a friend of mine...she died in 1918 so the item is pretty (REALLY) old. When I put this on auction, I should NOT polish it...correct? Thanks again for any help/info.

Ican't read the mark well enough to tell who made it. I think that it is silver plate & in very poor condition. The 400 stands for 40% silver. Make a deep scratch on the bottom & see if it shows copper. Most old silver plate is on copper.

I don't think there is anything left to polish. Looks like the silverplate has worn off and you are down to a base metal.

Looks like a Willian Rogers silver plate stamp. Anyone have a reference book on it to look it up?

Could that be an oddly-shaped eagle at the very beginning of the mark?

Can I have it? I am a sucker for worn-out silverplate! I like it as much as I like worn-out green paint on furniture, my big weakness!
All kidding aside, that does look like Wiliam Rogers stamp to me.

Thanks for all the help/info. I scratched a small place on the bottom...resulting in a bright silver streak...no evidence of copper. It appears that, at one time it may have been painted as there's a layer (small and almost worn away) on one of the edges on the bottom. Dragonmom...let me know your e-mail address and I'll let you know when it's on eBay. It's really quite nice (I think) and the puffy inside lining is 100% intact...Any more info (is it or is it not Rogers???) is always welcome...Thanks!

Latest update...I took some silver polish and polished a small section on the bottom...Underneath 100 years of "stuff", it was bright silver. I'm NO expert on silver/silverplate...Does this latest info give anyone any insights? Thanks...I don't want to misrepresent this item when I put it on auction...
