im kind of confused. everyone here keeps saying ups is cheaper. i have a package that weighs 5lbs. i did a comparison between ups and usps to see what would be the cheapest. ups shipping will cost $11.18 for ups ground. usps will cost $9.75 for priority, and that is with insurance and delivery conformation added. am i missing something or did i read something wrong?!

Did you actually take the package to both services, have it weighed and get a quote from each of them, or did you get your numbers off their web sites? I find that in most cases, the web site quotes aren't even close to what you actually have to pay ... sometimes higher and sometimes lower.

What are the origin and destination zip codes?

I just went to the UPS website and used the following info:

-64111 (Kansas City) to 92618 (L.A.)
-5 lbs - dimen of 24 x 12 x 12
-to a residental adddress
-$100 insurance value

and I got a quote of $6.21 for UPS Ground.

Something really doesn't sound right with your quote unless you selected some other services.

I don't know what UPS charges, but FedEx Ground would be $5.75 from my zip in CA to KC 93455 to 64111. That is Zone 7 in my FedEx book. Using the same Zone for Priority mail, the cost would be $11.00

In case you didnt know . if you have a heavy package.

UPS will pick it up at your location (Home Office, Warehouse) (You dont need an account just a credit card)

It only costs about $2 extra for a one time pickup, But its nice when your have a 20lbs package or more

i use UPS a lot. everytime I have taken a package to our local Fedex counter the charge has been 2-3 times what UPS charges.

i even ask is that for ground shipping? I don't understand why other people find it cheaper?

Out of curiosity, Are you going to FedEX, or an outlet like Mail Boxes Etc? They usually tack on at lest $2.00 handling. I have an account with FedEx & they are only a half mile away. I just returned home from mailing pkg to VT from CA. It weighed 8 lbs. The buyer wanted it sent toher PO Box by Priority Mail. The cost was $15.75 plus $2.20 insurance. I could have sent it by FedEx Ground for $7.90. It would have automatically been insured for $100.00 which is what I had to pay the PO $2.20.

Every Package I ever shipped UPS ( at customers request only)!
Has cost 75% more than USPS!
That's why I ship USPS Priority only!
USPS delivers on Sat. UPS does not!
USPS delivers in 2/4 days, UPS 8/10 days!

USPS puts item in truck and delivers.
UPS from the looks of packages, pulls item behind truck then delivers.

Well folks I may get lots of static from this post but i'm going to say it anyway. The USPS shipping rates are way out of bounds. The only savings they offer is for very light in weight items shipped at the cheaper rates and small light weight items shipped by PM and PP.

If a seller ships anything that weighs three pounds or more UPS/FedEx is the only way to go. Not only is the first $100.00 worth of insurance free but so is package tracking. It's only 0.35¢ for each $100.00 in additional value. The USPS can't compete.

I see people on this board all the time crying about sales. I use UPS exclusively and my sales are booming. Want to check me out? My eBay user ID is [email protected]
Be sure to read my TOS about shipping. The only time I use USPS is for the U.S. Possessions, Hawaii and Alaska.

If you've got something to sell get a UPS/FedEx daily pickup account and forget about the USPS. Using the USPS to ship your merchandise is killing your sales unless you ship very light items or use media/book rate mail.

Fire away!!! I'm all ears.

rampaged ... i am currently switching over to ups for my heavier items. only problem is the closest ups center is in the next city. =/ would it be cheaper to do the ups ground one time pickup with the $2.00 added or have daily pickup? what is the monthly cost to have daily pickup? i only do about 10 - 15 packages a month that would be shipped ups. is it more than $20 a month?

UPS may or may not be right for you. About 99% of what I ship is heavy cast iron products.

A daily pickup account varies in cost. The less you ship the more it cost to use it. You need to call 1-800-PICK-UPS to get all the details that would apply to you.

I pay $7.00 a week which is the minimum cost to use the service. I ship from 50 to 100 packages each week Monday thru Friday. I never ship on Saturday as it's 2nd day air and cost the customer more money.

If you look at my auctions you'll see that I advertise the cheaper UPS shipping and encourage potential bidders to send their zip code for a shipping quote. This has doubled my business since January of this year.

When the customer ask for a shipping quote I also send to them what it would cost by PM and PP. Of course it's always higher than UPS especially if you add on the USPS insurance and Delivery Confirmation.

With UPS insurance is automatic and so is package tracking. Not only that but UPS sends the customer an email the day the package is shipped along with the tracking number and other pertinent data.

Damage claims are easy to file and you not only receive payment for the damaged goods but also the cost of shipping.

You get 7/24 support by phone and get to talk to a real live knowledgeable human when you call. The software furnished by UPS is easy to use and printable UPS lables are free. I order them 800 at a time. They are delivered the next day by UPS.

If you have other question send me an email at [email protected]

You must be shipping one pound items. I have never seen Priority beat UPS rates over 3 pounds, and UPS also gives insurance and tracking for free.

USPS delivers in 2-4 days, problem is you pay extra for it. Heck, why not pay 4x as much and have it delivered Express Next Day? According to your reasoning that is better.

I've seen quite a few packages from USPS mutilated. I often get packages sent to me through UPS and my supplier does a horrible job packaging yet the boxes and items come to good as new.

Maybe its just your area.

Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

Sounds to me if you are a little confused or have your UPS and USPS mixed up in your response.

"Every Package I ever shipped UPS Has cost 75% more than USPS! No Way

USPS delivers in 2/4 days, UPS 8/10 days!
Not true UPS is much faster than that. Read my feedback about fast shipping at the following eBay ID [email protected]

You must be shipping one pound items. I have never seen Priority beat UPS rates over 3 pounds, and UPS also gives insurance and tracking for free. What are you saying here. Go back and read my post. I ship heavy cast iron products

quickdraw29 It appears your post is a cut and paste that needs to be redefined as it is all mixed up on the UPS/USPS quote.

Sorry, I did now see that you were responding to dadofstickboy

You are absolutely right in your response. UPS packages as well as USPS and FedEx packages must be packaged well or they will suffer damage. All carriers handle packages in a rough manner.

sanmar, I am going to the Fedex company. the last package i tried was going from Ohio to San Antonio, Texas. UPS charged me $8.45, Fedex quoted $21.87!! She got very snippy when I questioned it and said "That is the cheapest rate I have"

quickdraw,

not only is UPS usually cheaper, if there is damage (which is rare) the insurance is taken care of within a week to 10 days. try that turnaround with the USPS.

the only time UPS is higher is a lightweight package from here to the west coast.

This is a quote I gave on a 14.5 pound cast iron bird bath that's 22" tall. Shipping from zip code 36206 in Anniston, AL to 43230 in Columbus, OH

Tell me USPS is cheaper.

All shipments are by UPS!!!

$5.61 to a business address by UPS which includes free insurance and package tracking.
$6.71 to a residential address by UPS which includes free insurance and package tracking.

* $16.20 by Priority mail without insurance or package tracking.
* $10.73 by Parcel post without insurance or package tracking. (

* Because of the heavy items I sell and due to the recent postage rate increase
it is no longer feasible for me to use the US Post Office to ship my merchandise.
All shipments are by UPS!!!

rampaged & quickdraw29:

I don't offer UPS as an option.
I do however offer USPS Express as an option, but nobody has asked for it: Understandably!

My earlier post was neither a cheerleading session or an argument.

It was however actual facts based on my past limited dealings with UPS.

Also these dealings were before the USPS price increase. %'s may well be lower now!

Any item under one pound, I ship via USPS.

Anything over that goes UPS. It's cheaper almost everytime.

Just the other day, I was going to send a large oversize package across the country:

UPS Ground: $60.00
USPS Parcel Post: $120.00
