Got my first NEG from a newbie this week
Over 300 positives, never a complaint until now. The jerk 'first time ebayer' got lucky and won an auction I started at a penny for one cent. I underquoted shipping at $3.50, but I ate it like a good seller should. So I ended up paying $5 to ship somthing I got $3.51 for, but I didn't complain. Then the buyer emails me and says he never recieved the item. So I respond:
"I went ahead and issued a refund through Billpoint. My wife and I both remember shipping your item, but we cannot find the postal receipt to pursue the matter further. Please accept our apologies for all the trouble. This is the first time this has happened to us. I hope you will not avoid ebaying with us (or anyone) in the future."
And he responds:
"Thank You..The confirmation is in my Inbox."
Two weeks later he leaves me negative feedback. Ouch. What else could I have done to make this guy happy? I guess I could have scourged yardsales and flea markets to find a like item, and then drive from Michigan to Texas and delivered the item in person. I supose if I did that he would want his shipping money refunded though, since I did not have to pay a shipping service.
Alas, I lament. It is bound to happen to all of us sooner or later. But that doesn't make it sting any less when it actually happens. There are two types of sellers on Ebay, those who have recieved negative feedback, and those that will. It is unavoidable. Just when you think your doing everything possible to bend over backwards for buyers, checking your email 28 times a day, instantly responding to all questions and issues, starting to feel feedback invincible BAM! some noob hits you where it hurts.
Well, I won't let it keep me down. I offer some of the best customer relations on Ebay and one idiot newbie is not going to change that. I am putting both oars in the water with my Ebay business and not stopping till I roe my way off the end of the earth. I am going to have fun providing Ebayers top-notch service and unique items. I will continue leaving positive feedback to customers as soon as they pay. Stay the course as a thousand points of light become one.

yup, the first one is the painful one.
Respond to the negative professionally and politely, dust yourself off and keep on going. Above all try and not let 1 out of 300 change how you do business.

Hey ~ don't ya let it get you down.. happens to the best of us and you must go on with a very positive outlook or that neg will affect your sales, etc !
You could respond to that feedback so bidders will get a better idea of what happened.
Did you by chance leave feedback for that buyer first ??
That is my main reason for not leaving feedback for buyers first ... some people are just not honest and want to cause trouble !

At some point, of course, I had "perfect" feedback on all my seller IDs.
If I could have negged myself, I would have.
If you make it clear that feedback does not rule your life or your business, negs won't hurt and no one can hold the threat of a neg over your head.
I haven't checked recently, but I think one of my seller IDs has nearly 100 negs. So what? They still let me cash checks at the bank. I still sell on eBay. People still buy. Nothing's changed.

Imagine the pain that longtime ebayers must have when they get their first negative after having a perfect 1,500 or a 2,000 or a 2,500 or higher feedback rating.

Yes, I replied to the neg right away explaining that he had been refunded weeks before.
Fluffy: wow 100 negs? whats your total rating. I buy ALOT on ebay, probly as much as I sell. Feedbacks dont really concern me if the price is right until it reaches about 5 or 10 percent of positives. But it has kept me from bidding on multi-hundreds of dollar items.

I have 1030 FB & 4 neutrals, 3 of them are positives, but the buyers just checked the wrong box. The one neutral I have just says neutral & I'll be darned if I know why. I had no problem with the buyer, she had no problem with me.
I dread my first neg & sometimes I wish it were over & done with.

I got my first neg a few years ago when I did not resonded to the seller within in her TOS 3 days. I had bought a lousey $5.00 Beanie Baby to put on a gift package for my newborn grandson. Unfortunately, he was hospitalized shortly after he was born with a form of encephalitis from an infection my daughter-in-law had before he was born. It was a horrible and very freightening time for us. We were at the hospital for 4 full days and I had no access to a puter, nor did I even think about E-Bay and my little purchase. Of coures, he was hospitalized on the day the auction ended. My daughter was checking my e-mail for me and when I got home on the 4th day she said, "Better check your e-mail. You have a very angry seller." I e-mailed her all of my info and paid immediately with PayPal. I apologized to the seller for not responding to the WBN 4 days after the auction ended. I explained the circumstances which must not have mattered to her because sure enough, a great big red neg the next day saying I did not follow her TOS. Yep, my one an only neg and I got it within 4 days of the auction closing. She later e-mailed me and she apologized for negging me so quickly. She gave some excuse about the stress of caring for her sick mother as the reason for pulling the trigger on me so quickly and no, not one word about how my grandson was doing. I would have expected some empathy from her if she was really caring for a sick mother!!I was so angry I tossed the Beanie in the garbage when it came. I now have over 1000 positives and only that one neg from the Beanie Witch. It still riles the H--L out of me when I see it.. My grandson did just fine and thank God, he had no lasting effects from that very scary illness. He started pre-school yesterday.

In my opinion you deserved this negative. This new buyer wins an auction very cheap and then you claim to have sent out the package. Now when the package does not show you can not find the reciept. I would think you were trying to stick it to me too.

I agree with toolhound. I also wonder whether the package was really "lost" in the mail. And the shipping receipt was also lost? There goes the tax deduction! This seller seemed all too willing (and quick) to issue a refund even though packages can sometimes take weeks to arrive. I've shipped over 2000 packages through the USPS and I haven't had a single package get lost in the mail. I think this seller is fibbing!

After you get you first neg, you begin to realize it doesn't hurt you afterall, and you can stop trying so hard to avoid future negs and just go about your business as you see fit.
That first neg was the best thing that could have happened to me.

Just got an email from the buyer, and it's a doosie:
"Rob,
My apologies, man. I had won another 10 commandment plaque and when I went to pick it up at the Post Office, the post office gave me yours and the one I won. The P.O. said that they left 2 pickup slips in my mail box and since I hadn't came down, they returned it. I never received a pickup slip in my mail box and this newest one was left in my door. Since I work nights, it was probably stolen. After giving me the package, P.O. said they didn't know what happened and gave me the package anyway. I'm still interested in buying the one from you as well. Let me know a reasonable price and I'll mail it off it off. The package is currently not opened.
Regards,
Rory"
Having said that, toolhound and saddamhussien... well I wont even bother. With attitudes like that the world is destined to beat you down much more than any words I could ever retort to your off-based accusations.
As to waiting to leave feedback, I still don't think it's worth the effort waiting and watching for feedback constantly. I would rather be putting my effort into selling more items, and making more money than sitting back with my finger on the Neg trigger. That's why I leave feedback once paid. I am considering not doing so with ebay newbies though.

Eagle, if your BUYER feels enough Remorse I "think" you can get the Feedback (Negative) Removed. Ebay had a service at one time that you would pay I think $15 for and they (If BOTH the Buyer and Seller agreed) would REMOVE a Negative. I think they claimed it could Help with Mistake Feedback (which this is), But I think it Had more to do with "How to Profit from Feedback Removal". Maybe the Buyer will even agree to Pay for it, at Least you could ask. You could Also ask them to Respond to Your Response to the Negative..Something like "Above Feedback was BIG Mistake, Seller Did Great Job, MY Apologies"...They Can ONLY Say No, or Maybe YES! If I did That to someone By Mistake (or Iggnorance), I WOULD PAY FOR THE Feedback Removal! Yep, the First Negative REALLY Hurts (I have Just One, took me a WEEK to get over it), But MAYBE you can Fix it ,or at Least Repair it Somewhat.
