Good Citizens,
This query may seem rather broad, but I am looking for some guidance in the "finding new products to sell area". I am selling odds and ends collectables, which I obtain through local auction houses. I am enjoying this, but would like to supplement my sales with items that are more retail oriented, and that don’t require me to do hours of research.
I have browsed on-line for distributors and wholesaler, but I am reluctant to buy “lots” that contain store returns, etc. I am also not in a position to buy partial truckloads of items.
In recent weeks, I have been looking in the Thomas register for manufacturers and distributors of various products with the intention of inquiring about how to become a wholesale distributor. Many of these manufacturers are not particularly interested in dealing with the Mom and Pop.coms.
Ideally, I would like to find products that are fairly mainstream, but not junky. I want to understand what “tools” successful ebayers are using to connect with good suppliers. I am more then willing to continue to cold call manufacturers etc until I figure out how to establish good supplier connections, but I am guessing there is a wealth of knowledge out there that can help bypass some of the growing pains.

I am hoping that my post will not be taken the wrong way. Finding a type of product is not the question. I am NOT looking for the magic elixer. I am hoping people will discuss the vehicle that they used successfully to connect with suppliers.

This is a good post, unlike others that have basically asked that people give them the telephone number of their supplier.
Sometimes it is a matter of luck - just being at the right place at the right time.
Sometimes it is a matter of hard work - Many wholesalers are not willing to work with small businesses, but some are. I don't know if you are near a big city, but going to the wholesale district and talking face to face might do more than just a phone call. It might be worth a trip.
Sometimes, it is taking a different approach. Don't stick with a dead product line too long, and think about all the different ways of (legally) acquiring product to sell. You may be buying one way, and another way is better. My parents made this change (they are on ebay) and it's been profitable for them.

If you have a tax number you can visit the gift or trade shows in your area and see all the latest products.
