Hi,

I'm about to buy some heavy books weighting 115 kilos, or 230lbs from the UK and it will be shipped to Los Angeles. The seller quoted me 265 Sterling pounds to ship the books over. Which is a few times the price I will be paying for those books.
Does someone know where I can find cheaper a shipper ? If waiting time is not a big concern ? I could have the sellers break it up in multiple shipments, etc.

Thanks for any help.

I'm confused.... Have you already won the auction? You say you are "about to buy" but then say the shipping is many times what you have already paid?

Hi,

No I have not won yet, but can estimate the price at the end of the auction. And after the shipping quoted, it's at least twice to a few more times the price of the item itself. I just want to know if there is a cheaper solution, the seller is willing to use what ever I decide.

ask her to look for consolidated freight forwarders which consolidate shipments to usa, usually go to one place in us and then someone is willing to route from there,
there are some which do this for books

USPS also uses an M-Bag which is used specifically for heavy books going overseas. Kind of like media rate. I've never used it, but would think it would be somewhat reasonable.

Ihula-M bag is from the U.S. to a foreign country, not from the UK to the U.S.

us book discount sellers buy from uk a lot,ask her to find some consolidated shippers who deal in books ,books come from uk to usa and see if they can include yours, but land freight once it docked here is a different matter.
i hope it is worth the expenses!!
also mold and mildew is a problem crossing the ocean.

You know, you could just about go and get them yourself for less money.

Sure, you'd have a couple extra bags on the return. You would have to factor that cost in. And perhaps there are some books you don't really care to have, but come with the lot. Those you could chuck.

But the SuperSaver-type fares to the UK in the off-season (which this is) can be ridiculously low.

I want to be a fly on the wall when you send the "So is it OK if I come and pick them up in person?" email.
