I read a column in the Wall St Journal the other day where office workers were bemoaning the lousy offices they had gotten over the years. One man was stationed next to the fax and copier, so naturally people would turn to him for help. Offices (or cubes) located near the door often make you the de-facto receptionist. And the worse your office, the more people think they can send scut work your way.

Reading that, I was so happy (once again) that I work at home, selling on eBay.

I used to work in an office with a co-worker less than six feet away who apparently was the tobacco companies' best customer. She chain-smoked Kools and what is worse, she wore huge amounts of this gawd-awful perfume. Either one would have been bad enough, but the combination of the two was literally nauseating. (I took the matter to my boss and to personnel; both refused to do anything since the woman was black.) I put up with massive drycleaning bills until I couldn't take it anymore.

I am so happy that I work in a smokefree, perfumefree environment and that I have absolute power to keep it that way.

At one executive search firm where I worked, I was called into the manager's office because I hadn't filled out the United Way payroll contribution card. I was told that I had better designate a percentage of my salary to UW if I wanted to continue working there. The company had a "goal" they needed to meet.

I am so happy that now I can contribute truly privately to causes I believe in, and you know what? I'm giving more now than I ever gave when I was employed.

If I want a snack, the refrigerator is a few steps away. If the phone rings, I don't have to answer it. If I feel like napping, I simply do.

There is no better job in the world.

Amen to that! I think that is the best thing that I have heard all day.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I love not being chained to a desk having to answer the phone on the second ring.

Having to take the phone to the bathroom with you just in case it rings while your away from your desk.

I can now enjoy a beautiful sunny day. Instead of only being able to watch other people enjoy it from my office window.

I don't get calls on my lunch hour from the boss wondering where I am and when I'll be back.

I'm more available to my kids.

Great idea, this post!

I was able to save enough money to go back to college this semester and take all the neat day-classes that were never provided in the evenings 7 years ago.

I can sneak away to the movies and spend the afternoon with Nicholas Cage and not feel guilty.

I don't have to see the ignorant buyers face to face and can take a breather after a bad email to calm down. -------

AND I get to work with some of the nicest ebay customers who just keep coming back for more of my products.

But the best part, I am making more money then I did when I was working for a salaried job 3 years ago!!!

Thanks for the post, Fluffy

Yes, Thank you Fluffy for a fun post. I now work from home all the time and love it. I was laid off from my job and never realized how stressful it was until it isn't there any more.

I've now been working from home for 18 months now and love it. I know that I will go back to a "real" job someday, but for now, I am having a blast. I can work when I want, not work when I want, and take long vacations without any problems. I always had problems with having enough time off, and that is not a problem anymore.
