Talk about monopoly.
Ebay seems to be the only auction on the internet. What's wrong with the others; don't they know how to compete?

They don't want to invest the capital needed to take down a giant like ebay. I keep hearing about AOL opening up an auction site, but we'll have to see, as I've been hearing that rumor for over two years now. Depending on what you sell, I still believe that having your own website is the best way to compete against ebay.

eBay isn't the only auction site, but it is the only site that has profected the process to attract sellers and buyers.
If Yahoo and Amazon, ePier or whoever did the same as eBay we sellers instead of working 8 - 15 hours a day we could be working 24/7

It would be nice to have competation but with the things eBay does nobody can compare. Yes maybe their listing prices are lower or their FVF but they are not as user friendly as eBay.

Try one of the others maybe you'll like one of them.

Others have tried and failed miserably ( Yahoo ). The new AOL auction is suppose to be for big retailers only.

"The new AOL auction is suppose to be for big retailers only"

eBay is slowing getting to that point as well.

Amazon started as book only.

When they added auctions, if they had made it books (used, antiquarian, etc) only they could have OWNED that auction category.

I told them so, too..

But they didn't listen. Now their auctions have to compete against ebay.

If yahoo was to go back to the way it use to be I would start listing there as I once did. I know the many complaints about it being a warehouse and like that, but thats not so bad. At least I did make good profits there.

Ebay is the king, but Yahoo is a very good 2nd tier site. As long as you don't list crappy sports cards, and other very low quality items, you can do well. Don't leave ebay though. Use Yahoo as a second place to list items. The best thing that you will find is the deadbeat rate is the lowest in the auction industry.
Good luck.

Seems to me Ebay is the generic name for selling on the internet, much as Kleenex is what many of us call all tissues, and Sanka is THE decaf coffee, etc. They got there first and biggest. "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Who said that? Some very wise man.

Origin
Lord Acton, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 1887. 'Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men'.

The the BINs and Fixed Price Auctions taking over ebay so I think you are correct. Someday soon ebay may be as much as 90% BINs and Fixed Prices and selling on the internet will mean selling and not auctioning off goods.

auction is meant for hard to find, rare or one of a kind items, ebay has a lot of new items, easy to find items and common items,so BIN and fixed prices work better for those items.

Correct, and I can easily see a 90/10 percentage at ebay with the 10 being auction format for hard to find items.

Ebay became the dominant online auction site early and, now, controls this market. Even if a new site copied Ebay, in all ways, exactly, they'd still fail because the sellers wouldn't list their good stuff until the buyers showed up and the buyers won't show up until there is good stuff listed. So, you end up with new auction sites filled with free-listing crap.

Ioffer seems to be getting good reviews although I haven't tried it. Bidchaser.com is a new kid on the block and looks very promising as an Ebay alternative.

Ebay is still the best, but it doesn't always have to be that way. It's up to buyers and sellers to scope out the underdogs and find one that's a good fit. Asking about their marketing plans is a great place to start. A none answer is usually a good indicator.

Personally, I like to stay clear of any site that is completely free and has about 10 listings.
