Hello All...I've been very reluctant to start up any auctions because it seems like sales have been so slow. The last auction I had about 3 weeks ago, I put up some really nice stuff that would normally sell well and for decent prices. I think only about 1/2 the stuff sold and at starting bid price. Have sales gotten better over the last few weeks or are they still in the toilet? I don't feel good about starting auctions if they aren't going to fetch the prices they should be getting. So what's up folks?

With the last two promotions E-Bay had,I have done super. I'm still listing along like always, getting new merchandise all the time so I keep switching what I list. Who knows maybe that helps.

SalGal, to answer your question...I'm selling items like Fostoria glassware, Royal Copley, misc. older glassware mostly. Plus a few odds and ends and collectibles as well. Wish I could turn back time to five years ago and sell everything I have now. That was when eBay was really fetching big money. Ahhh, those were the days.

In the summer we do “Annual Summer Inventory Sales,” on eBay and basically sell off our current inventory, prior to making major buys at the major wholesaler's convention in late summer.

NOW, on our web sites, women’s clothing is moving extremely well, but house hold items, lamps, table wear, etc., has slowed down.....which merely reflects the time of year.

Because we put 99% of our items on sale, both on eBay and on our web sites and at highly discounted prices, items are moving right along for us.......it isn’t like selling in the Winter, but it has been steady and good, and the inventory is going.

I think these first few weeks in the summer many, many folks are out of town, or planning on being out of town for vacations, and are holding back expendable income for their once a year big “vacation!”

I am sure sales vary based on what you sell – and the time of year. Hang in there, retail sales always have their up and down times during the year, happens every year since I started on eBay in 1996.

I sell old jewelry and collectibles. One week my sales are up, the next they are down. It irks me to no end when a program like 20/20 does an ebay show and then the next week Barbara Walters reads the negative email from the show about how awful the sellers are and how many buyers are being ripped off and warnings not to buy on ebay. I would venture to say that there are far more deadbeat bidders than there are fraudulent sellers. Everytime that stuff is aired, we are apt to lose customers. For once, I'd like to hear about all the deadbeat bidders that sellers have to cope with.

Cheryl, I didn't see the show or the reading of the emails but you have a good sense for words and are a reputable seller why not write Barbara Walters a letter and tell her your thoughts. You never know she just might do an update and interview you. It's worth the try.

I watch 20/20 faithfully and never saw that show on ebay. When was it aired? I know there was recently one on 60 Minutes II and they did the follow-up with the negative letters from viewers.

Yes, press like that hurts the small seller more than anyone else.

I think you may be right. I get all the news shows mixed up as I watch all of them. I do know that Barbara has gotten email from ebay buyers though. It was a few weeks ago when she read some of her email. I may just drop her an email. I often wonder why the shows concentrate on the sellers and not the buyers. One of these shows ought to do a segment on how to buy AND PAY on ebay. Also letting all the buyers know the costs involved to sell on ebay. Most seem to think our time and efforts are worth a plug nickle. I for one must have lost 10 pounds yesterday (LOL). My office is on the second floor with a wall full of windows facing west. The afternoon sun is brutal. Only one window opens and I can't put an air conditioner in them because they are windows that open like doors. So, when it's 92 outside, I think my time is worth double.
