Around 1-2 weeks ago, someone here turned me on to this Brit's nifty script for watching the watchers!
I've used it now for the past 10 days, &, apparently, it does NOT disturb feeBay's JAVA SCRIPT filters, as I've encounterned NO problems!
It is a small FREE script that you insert into yer listings -- you then log into his site & watch how many folks have put each item on a WATCH LIST!!
He also just came out with hidden smart counters to work in tandem with the WATCH LIST counters.
He does REQUEST donations, but it's voluntary -- I blew $5 in appreciation of his efforts! He also RESPONDS to emails within 12-24 hrs!
If ye be interested, here is a link to the sign-up page where you can generate yer personal script:

It's pretty interesting -- I never really thought anybody used the WATCH THIS ITEM button, but a lot of my thingys are really getting the ole STARE!!
More fun than watching paint dry or listening to Ralphie snore, I think this provides more meaningful info than just counters!
Who knows??

Well thank you auctionace ! I like this thing !! I have one item with no bid but 5 people have book marked it.....I see a sniping coming on(or 5 sellers watching). It's a budweiser cumberbund and bow ties set...for a woman.I couldn't find any like it on e-bay so I believe it's buyers. This has made it fun to watch whichever way it goes !!

It was on an OTWA ebay board. They run about 700 posts a day and it seems that 90% of the threads are political whinning but there is some good info that gets posted there about ebay.

The word "cummerbund" is frequently misspelled as "cumberbund," and this is why some sellers find it beneficial to deliberately have different spellings in their auctions. Since you have no bids yet, you might revise your auction to include the correct spelling in the description. The five people you have watching it are probably looking for Budweiser-related items (so the spelling might not matter as much), but you'd get a wider audience by having both spellings.

When I encounter words that are often misspelled I try to place both spellings in the auction description to catch the possible search engine searches. Words with dashes too. I'll try a few different ways so the search engine has a chance to find the item.

That is pretty cool. If I start selling agin, I will give it a shot.
The word "cummerbund" is frequently misspelled as "cumberbund,"
Actually, both spellings are deemed correct. It has its origins in a persian word and "cummerbund" was the original english pronunciation. Not long afterwards "cumberbund" showed up. Both spellings have been around for hundreds of years.
edited to add:
Don't tell that to formalwear sellers. They get het up with the "cumberbund" usage.

Japerton, I bought a pocket knife at a yard sale a few weeks ago for a buck, put it on ebay and it went over $200!!
I knew it "could be something" when I bought it, but I never knew how collectible some jacknifes could be!!

Merriam-Webster is the only dictionary I could find that even shows cumberbund as a variant of cummerbund (I don't have online or paper access to the OED at this time). The other online sources and my dictionary here at home only have "cummerbund." Being only a variant, I can see why tux shops insist on the preferred spelling. The variant probably cropped up due to someone's mispronunciation or misspelling, and the wrong one became prevalent enough that its existence eventually had to be acknowledged.

lurkyloo:
As I said both forms have been in use for narly the same amount of time. The usage varies from region to region.
If you want to get technical about pronunciation, neither is really correct. The original was pronounced with the emphasis on "Camer" as opposed to "Cummer". More of an "ah" sound as opposed to a "u" sound. So, the tux shops are using the incorrect form also. It is kamarband (which has gone the way of the dodo). Sometimes (very rarely), spelled kamarbhand.
This was a question on a test I had to take about 25 years ago. They told me I only missed one in the spelling and word definitions. For the question, I gave 3 spellings as being acceptable: "cummerbund, "cumberbund", and "kamarband". The professors that were testing me had "cummerbund" as the correct spelling. I urged them to research the matter a little more. About a week later they came back and told me that I was correct on all points and told me that they had found another spelling, "kamarbhand".
The variant probably cropped up due to someone's mispronunciation or misspelling, and the wrong one became prevalent enough that its existence eventually had to be acknowledged.
That is exactly what happened...Hence we have "cummerbund" and "cumberbund" instead of "kamarband".
Words and origins are a strange little hobby of mine. Have been since I started reading...More years ago than I would like to own up to.

Thanks for the info about this cool site; several ago when I read this I went in and signed up, was getting my 'stats' on the watchers, etc.
But today NADA, can't get into the site at all; got no daily email from BaconButtie as I have been; guess their site is down or something; I think it's in the UK..
Anyone else having problems with them?
