I've been getting many emails during the last week, supposedly from ebay, telling me that my account has been suspended and I need to open a new account with them. Then, they ask for my email and password.

Of course, I recognize this as phoney mainly because I can go to my ebay account and continue to use it.

Question: It looks like it is from a legit ebay address. How can you tell that it is not from ebay? anyone know?

When it's from ebay, they won't ask you for any kind of personal information at all, and they will never give you a link to click on to enter any of that information.

If it doesn't ask for any of that, then it MIGHT be from ebay. Other than that, any kind of "identifying marks" on any email are either already being duplicated, or will be in the near future.

I got one this morning - a sternly-worded missive. If you do a little poking around in the request form you'll notice the form-fill e-mail address is suspensions@safesharbors (notice the erroneous plurals). These people should be SHOT! The wording probably will scare the hell out of anyone who's not privy to this crap. Bastards! I sent it to spoof at ebay.com. What WILL they think of next?

Dear customer,

We regret to inform you that your eBay account will be suspended due to the violation of our site policy below:

* Misrepresentation of Identity (User) - Representing yourself as another eBay user or registering using the identity of another.

Due to the suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using eBay in any way. This includes the registering of a new account.

Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed-upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to eBay.

According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by completing the following form or else your account will be deleted.

Check out this thread from yesterday:
http://www.vendio.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=519962

To summarize, after receiving several of these emails, I forwarded all of them to Safe Harbor & included my home phone number. Then all of my auctions were cancelled by ebay. Ebay called my home yesterday afternoon & told me that my password was stolen & to change my password ASAP, which I did.

Anyone know HOW ebay knew my password was stolen?

Advice to all: Change your passwords!

ip address would tell where the person logging on with your password is coming from.
but how do they steal your password??
did you fill in some of these scam forms and hit enter??
some of these emails look almost like the real thing from ebay until you study the reply email addr and the URL.

No, I didn't fill in any fake emails. But I'm glad eBay called me.
