Did this large (12 inches high including stopper) once hold some sort of liquor? The only information I could find on it was some printing imprinted in the glass on the bottom but, even with my trusty magnifying glass, I couldn't read it. Any info will be, as usual, enormously and eternally appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know what it says but when you list it - be sure to include Brittany Spaniel in the title and include his coloring as "Liver and White" in the description ( Bird Dog and Pheasant wouldn't hurt either ). It's slightly unusual that the tail is shown full since most usually have their tails bobbed as pups. Pretty piece though - lert me know when you list it - my parents have had Brittanies for years and maybe I'll torment my mother with it as still another thing she has to find a place for .

(We have given up on trying to find the perfect wanted gift - gift season has turned into a contest to find the nicest yet somehow annoying gift - something else to dust is always a good bet - that and As Seen On TV kitchen appliances that are of little use but a constant reminder that she ran out of cabinet space in the kitchen 5 years ago))

It's a Jim Beam bottle.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

This is the only Spaniel Jim Beam bottle I could find. I don't think it's a Jim Beam bottle.

Brittanies aren't spaniels, they're pointers. The dog's ears are the wrong shape and set incorrectly for a Brittany.

The dog in question looks like a field-bred English Springer with an undocked tail--or even a badly rendered field-bred English Setter.

Do a rubbing of the bottom of the decanter.

I am not a bathtub full of brightly-colored machine tools on Vendio.

Karen - I think you are incorrect. Brittanys are spaniels. It is a natural pointer however that is not the catagory of it's breed unless you know something that the AKC does not.

According to AKC: The Brittany was named for a French Province. From 1934-1982, it was registered by AKC as Spaniel,Brittany. On September 1,1982 it's official name was changed to Brittany.

The dog in the pic has too little feathering, and too short of ears to be an English Springer or Setter.

Thanks, all...GREAT info...as usual, AW-ers (oops, Vendioians) came through. Since Jim Beam called it a "Dog Facing Right" glass, maybe that's what I'll put in the description...and the Brittany people can take a look. Thanks, Fluffy, for the suggestion...good idea and I'll remember that for future identification tricks. I'll be listing this on Thursday...Thanks, tom, for the link...it was perfect and my decanter/glass was there!

Blue - if all you say is "dog facing right" how will Brittany owners know to look?

Good point...Actually, I'll put as many identifying words in the description as the 80 character limit will allow...Thanks!

Karen - I think you are incorrect. Brittanys are spaniels. It is a natural pointer however that is not the catagory of it's breed unless you know something that the AKC does not.

I've been showing dogs in AKC events for 30-ish years, including the last 17 in SPANIELS.

Brittanies are NOT categorized as spaniels by the AKC--hence the change in name at the request of the breed's parent club. They are pointers that flush birds, and they run in POINTING breed field trials and hunt tests, not flushing spaniel trials and tests.

The dog in the pic has too little feathering, and too short of ears to be an English Springer or Setter.

Not for a FIELD BRED springer or English setter--they have far less feathering than their show-bred cousins, and the ears on the dog drawn may actually be a bit large for a field-bred--they're definitely NOT the right shape or carriage for a Brittany--Brittanies have fairly small 'leaf-shaped' ears set more forward than those ears. The muzzle is also the wrong shape for a Brittany--they have fairly narrow muzzles without pendulant flews. It's also depicted in a classic setter pose, which means it's too long in the body for a Brittany. It's probably just an artist's rendition of a generic "bird dog", but if it's meant to be a Brittany, whoever commissioned it should've found another artist.

Karen be CORRECT about da ENGLISH SETTER!

My first dog (way back in 1975) was a FIELD BRED English Setter, & she had just about NO feathering! In fact, she wasn't even AKC registered -- she WAS registered in another registry, but I can't remember the name of it!

I'd be walking her & people would ask my her breed & I'd say "English Setter," & get curious stares & arguements! Then I'd have to go into my FIELD BRED spiel (LOL)

Well this has NOTHING to do with whiskey decanters, but then again I think the owner of this dog has seen the bottom of QUITE A FEW decanters!...Here is a dog postcard i am listing now...and I am CERTAIN the dog is a bassett hound but I am not too sure about the human...

Neglus - This one no one is going to argue with me on. My grandparents were breeders of Bassets and that's what your fellow there is. Way too cute too. Reminds me of one of the few dogs that was part of their household. (they had 40-50 dogs at any one time but there were only 5 that were ever considered "pets".

Karen - I stand corrected - we had Brits in our house from the time I was 13 ( stepfather is a bird hunter) and they were always referred to as spaniels.

BTW - I have been considering getting a basset (no Brits in the apartment - way too much energy) and would love to find one from my grandparents line. Is there a way to search stud lines based on breeder multiple generations back? I don't remember the registered name of their dominant stud (just his nickname) so I would have to search via breeder until I coul find his name. I know it is a major shot in the dark - just wondering if it is a possibility.

It is Willard Scott as Commander Retro and his dog Luther or Lester as Dr. Strangedog.

Not that I know this stuff. I just happened to find it on this site. Great pic!
