In the past 6 months I have relented & taken 2 checks. Well, Hello, Both of them bounced!!. The first was only for $12.00. The second is for $109.95. I waited 10 days & mailed the widget yesterday. Today I get the notice of NSF on the check. I have called the person & told them to send me a MO, but if they don't send it before the pkg gets there, I am afraid I will be out the $$$. That is the last check I will ever take.

Because I have a good relationship with my bank, it is only $6.00. Maybe on the other end it may $35.00.

I don't know where that information about checks taking 10 days to clear started, they can take up to a month. The only way to know when to mail is when the money is in your bank account & not a day before.

I hope it was the 12.00 item you mailed yesterday.

one dealer told me before ebay, she would call the bank and said i am a dealer and i have a check from so and so,is there enough money to cover the check??
of course it could still bounce, but for a few hundred dollars,it is worth the call.

I've taken lots of personal checks and never had one bounce.

Matter of fact, when I send out my EOA email, if it's less than twenty bucks or so, I tell them they can send a money order if they want to but it's not necessary, their personal check is just fine.

Guess I've been lucky?

Lucy

P.S. Sanmar, Two Buck Chuck isn't cheap, it's just reasonably priced very good wine!

Life's too short to drink cheap wine...

Thousands of personal checks and only one bad one that I got my money back from MAD online collection agency. ( no fees ). I prefer personal checks over money orders because if the post office loses their letter they are not out the expense and time of trying to track down a money order. I figure I get a fair amount of extra sales because I gladly accept personal checks and put that in my auction description.

I guess I've been lucky. In five years on Ebay, I've only had 2 checks bounce and they were both made good immediately with money orders.

Lucy.. A while back, Longs Drugs was carrying a couple of wines from a winery in Oildale. They were called Redneck Red and White Trash White. The labels alone are hilareous and worth the price of a bottle. I gave my brother in law a bottle of the white. He's afraid to open it. The label says it's a perfect wine for any trailer park potluck and goes great with fried catfish.

I state No Checks ...but have had 3 in a year...I figure thats pretty good odds.I look up the bank on line and call the 1-800 number and verify funds.Like stopwhining said it can still bounce but makes me feel better.

In hundreds of checks received, not a single bounced one. I ship immediately even though I don't deposit the check sometimes for a week or so after shipping. Am I also just lucky?

To those who are asking if you are lucky, the answer is yes. Sooner or later one will bounce. It took a long time to get my first bounced check but it came eventually.

I take checks anyway. I do have some guidelines. No "starter" or counter checks. No credit line cash advance checks, and especially if it's imprinted with someone else's name. If you can't be bothered to fill out the check completely, I'll return it to you.

I have had a check returned recently because the numeric amount didn't match the written amount (and I'd already shipped). I had a MONEY ORDER returned because the buyer had scratched out someone else's name, written mine in and initialed the change.

I've had the bank return a few because the seller forgot to sign the check or they forgot to date the check or the amount didn't match. Screw 'em, I signed the check for 'em ( in a scribble ) or filled out the date or whatever and redeposited the check without problems. Now I carefully check out each check before I deposit it.
Never accepting stater checks is a smart move.
I can believe the large number of checks I received that have their phone number, name, address, and Social Security Number embossed on the check. I wonder if these people ever complain about identity theft?

I've never had an internet buyer's check bounce, I had one from an art show go boink. The girl called me in tears, she was so upset. She drove to my house- hour and half drive for her- to bring me cash. I made her stay for dinner, it was a very nice evening. She turned out to be an Osteopath, (resident) and gave my back a tuneup before she left! I wish that would happen more often!
