I have someone who wants to do an off-ebay sale for $1800.00 worth of merchandise. He can't do paypal and I don't have a merchant account. He wants to do UPS COD. I don't feel comfortable with that - never used their service. I directed him to bidpay in the meantime and told him I would split the fees with him. Anyone done the UPS COD thing?

I did once for a $100.00 item.
Worked out OK.
The only bad thing was I had to drive 20 miles to the UPS center to pick up the M.O. when it came in!

I once did a COD for 3 packages to the same person. For some reason USPS only collected the money on 2 of the packages... and it took months to get them to reimburse me for the third package. I would never do a COD, I think they are too risky... especially on such a large order. If he has the money to pay on COD, there is no reason he can't send it to you first.

"especially on such a large order. If he has the money to pay on COD, there is no reason he can't send it to you first." unless he dont trust you. (negs etc) COD is a sort of escrow.

My feedback is pretty good, he just needs them in a hurry because he says he owns a golf store and wants to resell the clubs during a sale that's coming up.

Then he better HURRY over to a 7-11 or the Post office and get a MONEY ORDER. He owns a GOLF store? A BIG money business and wants to do a COD? Not on your life. No way! Scam man!

Offer to discount him the cost the overnighting his money order... then he has no excuse. COD is not any faster than normal mail, it may take longer because he has to be there with a money order in the correct amount at the time of delivery.
PLUS... if he decides he doesn't want them he could jerk around and delay, the post office will keep them for 30 days or so attempting delivery, you are out the product for quite some time.

What! COD has nothing to do with speed of delivery,COD is the driver coming to the buyers house and saying where's the Money? Here's the goods. No money, No goods. And the sellers goods are now sitting in some Lonesome town U.S.A. Some Fake,,,,form of payment! handed to a driver who is just that a delivery driver, takes payment and it's then forwarded to you. Why all the middle people? Cause it WORKS for crooks!

. . . and no stamps either (showing my age)
COD is a huge risk; they can hand over a bogus check or MO to the driver and all he'll do is stuff it in his brown shirt and drive away. 2 weeks later you get stiffed when it arrives in the mail from UPS.

If they are an established business I would consider sending an order that size UPS COD. I deal with several wholesale suppliers that only ship UPS COD.
COD is normally not cost feasible for a small order.

I would have this guy send payment. The problem with UPS COD is if this guy changes his mind between the time you send the item and it arrives. Then all he has to do is refuse the shipment, then you are stuck paying shipping both ways.
I would only do a COD for someone that buys items from me on a regular basis. Best thing to do is to have him/her send a check. If they do not want to do that, then sell the item to someone else.
Good luck
