Cheryl (or anyone who knows Asian-ware...),

Any idea what to call this and what might be the content of the writing on the side of the container? The maker's mark on the bottom is the same for both the cup as well as the container.

Okay - what do you call the container? It has a cork in it that I don't want to try to get out. It won't come out easily and I'm afraid I'll snap it off if I force it too much.

Any suggestions on what this might be and what the gist of the writing on it is, would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Wayne

That's very pretty, Wayne. The gold trim adds a lot. HOpe someone can help you with the language. It does definitely look like a sake set to me.

The writing looks like Hiragana, which is a Japanese script-like writing. I've yet to find anyone who can read it. Probably 1960's or later judging by the gold. The gold on the old pieces will be quite dull. It is a Saki set. Very nice. Wish I knew someone who could read it. I have a great friend who reads Japanese, but cannot read Hiragana. I have a small dish with similar writing.

Definitely a sake set, though I've never run across one with a cork for the main decanter. Though I cannot read Japanese, usually the message on the side would be something along the lines of "good health, happy times, etc."

Thanks for the help and comments so far. If anyone compares me again to Cheryl, they're a bit off base. Her knowledge far outshines mine - that's for sure!

Her helpfulness is probably also superior to me as well. However, I try to do what I can. As my knowledge base expands, I try to help when I can.
