I admit it... I have never used virus software before. I have occasionally used the online sites that do a virus check, but I have never had a virus.

I use netscape for my mail program and browser, which I think decreases my chances of getting a virus. I also do not have an address book. I have never opened an attachment.

I have however been getting over 100 messages a day containing the sobig virus... yesterday I woke up to 99 of these in my email, this morning it was only 80.

I am thinking I should probably get something to protect myself. My computer did come with a trial version of mcafee, which is long outdated.

Anybody have any recomendations for the easiest and most efficient program to use?

Norton is the best (I had the other one but was not happy with it). Get a fire wall (Norton) as well.

To not have something like above is like having unprotected sex with strangers, you WILL get something sooner or later.

And last, USE your updates regular.

No doubt - Norton Internet Security.

Until a few years ago, I swore by McAfee - until I got the NIMDA virus using their software. Their tech support couldn't even help me get the virus off my computer! A friend recommended Symantec - I called them and they helped me clean my computer...been with them ever since

I like PC-Cillin it updates itself when a new patch comes out.I'm so lazy about checking on the new updates so it's perfect for me.It's also easy to delete viruses it catches when you get one.

I have norton but it cost money after a certain length of time to upgrade it.
So I Went to AVG.com and u can download there free virus protection for at least a month but they dont bother you even after that month, and u get all the updates for free.
My old computer had norton and had gotten a worm and trogen virus but norton wasnt upgrade so it couldnt fix it, thats when I went to AVG and it cleaned out the virus and everytime you turn on your computer it scans through your C drive and folders for virus.
Now with my new computer It came with norton but as soon as it runs out im going back to AVE.com anti virus protection.

http://avg.com/

just check it out and go to the AVG free download, read it and see if its what you would like, remember its a very good antivirus even though its free.

Norton! As soon as an email with sobig hit my inbox (I did not even open it) - Norton quarantined it & had a message on the screen to notify me. Same with the worms!
Yes, it cost money - but worth every penny!

Norton. Worth every cent. I use System Works, better defragging utility than microsofts.

NORTON definitely, particularly if you run a Compaq computer, Compaq Computers do NOT like the McAfee Anti-Virus sytem, we run 5 Compaqs, and learned the hard way years ago - it is only NORTON for us. If you visit the McAfee site, you will find special instructions for Compaq computers, and that is because Compaq and McAfee don't work well together - NORTON is the best - keeps us safe all the time, OF COURSE NO ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM IS ANY GOOD UNLESS IT IS CONSTANTLY UPDATED.

You can set it to update automatically, which we do, but when a major virus is roaming around, I always check our Norton programs through their "live update" to make sure we have the latest protection.

Norton! I just renewed my annual subscription. It stopped two viruses this year before I even opened the emails.

Last night I signed up for McAffee Online through AOL. So far it looks o.k. and is not intrusive. It detected the blaster worm looking for a hole to crawl through while I was browsing this message board. Since I have Win98 it didn't matter but I followed the link to their site to verify that I was protected. It may be overkill, since AOL now scans all email passing through their servers for viruses and either repairs the virus or deletes the attachment. I'll bump this thread up in about a week and let everyone know how this thing is performing.

The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

It is not enough to just have an A/V. You need a firewall too.I have Norton Internet Security, & have had no problem with Blaster or Sobig. They didn't get through the firewall. Yes, Norton is expensive, but it works. My GF had Norton A/V, but not the Firewall, she got hit with both Blaster & sobig. She now has Norton Firewall & I make sure she checks for updates everyday.

NearSea: I've always been told to NEVER have more than 1 AV on a PC at a time!

I like NORTON & despise MAFEE!

Tom,
What difference could that make given of course that you dont try to run them simutaneously??

I have the free firewall from ZoneAlarm. It works great. I also update Norton whenever I first hear of a new virus rather than waiting for it to notify me.

Nothing got through this last week. I did get two strange attempts that Zone Alarm notified me about. I never heard of either of the companies so denied access to both.

And, not only is it free, but Zone Alarm is not intrusive and does not interfere with my auction listings or photo uploads.

I agree with lindajean. We have the free Zonealarm and we have not received a single weird email....

Tom, it is true, I can't run them both at the same time

And I have the upgraded Zone Alarm too, which is alway on.

Norton is set for email, if a virus comes thru, I get the pop up VIRUS ALERT, and it takes care of it from there.

I constantly upgrade everything, but this last one, I was gone for a few days, and bam, got hit.
