is the guy riding on horseback a japanese samurai??
the character are kansi/chinese characters of the artist, but i think this is a japanese piece.
if so,it is worth something.
lets see the picture of the warrior.
this looks like a cloisonne piece,if so,it is more $$.

you luckydog!
this is japanese, probably from japanese history of a general in battle.
now see if this is cloisonne or just plain enamel.
if you are going to list on ebay, mention his bow and arrows, samurai on horseback etc.
there are people who collect archery items.

Isn't the cross inside the circle as shown in the last photo Satsuma? It does look like Satsuma. I have a Satsuma plate and although not marked Satsuma on the bottom, this same mark appears on the top of the plate. The crackle appearance of the porcelain is also typical Satsuma. As far as reading the mark, I haven't even tried to read Japanese. It's more difficult than Chinese. Stopwhining you are right in saying there is an artist's signature there. What is says I can't say.

I think this may be from the Taisho period (1912-1926). However, it may be newer than that. Wish I could help with reading the piece better. I think that the top right mark is Satsuma and the bottom right is Japan. It is not cloisonne from what I can tell, but is nonetheless beautiful. In Cloisonne the design is done with tiny wires and then it is filled with enamel. I believe this to be hand painted porcelain. The crackle in the porcelain is deliberately done.

i dont know if the cross in circle means satsuma.
it may be the family crest/mon or the clan this general belonged, each family has its own mon.
if there is a japanese dealer nearby,it is worth your while to show it to him.
the item looks new,taisho would b early 20th c.

Okay, here's what I found out and it's not much. It is Satsuma and as stopwhining said is fairly new - last quarter 20th Century. The style of decoration is typical Satsuma and one of the marks seems to read Japan. If you can't get to a Japanese dealer you can sometimes email the mark to someone in Japan. I've done that before and they were helpful. Do a google search.

This site has lots of Japanese and Chinese marks. I'm not sure if you have it bookmarked or not but it seems to be the best one out there.

The site seems to load very slow for me at times.
