If there's a "Hand Painted Nippon" mark with the Green "M" within a wreath - indicating the manufacturer is Noritake - would it be "Pre-1908" when the Morimura brothers started using "Noritake" to mark their creations?

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

I'm not an expert on Noritake, but I do know that Nippon was used into the 20"s at least. Noritake mark was also made in red. I believe the red mark is earlier, making your piece one of the later ones.

There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

I'm not sure the exact date makes a difference here. Noritake collectors are more interested (at least in my experience) in the decoration on the piece. The style of the decoration and the wear (particularly of gold trim) matter.

Too bad it isn't Azalea.

My cats drink out of a beautifully-handpainted Noritake Nippon octagonal handled bowl. The gold is a little worn, though. No ill effects felt by felines yet.

This is from 1911. The wreath is an inverted image of the family crest of the Morimua family that symbolizes hanging wisteria.

Thanks, everyone.

Sanmar, since we're running into a lot of Noritake, are there a few "have to have" books you'd recommend - so I don't keep asking for a favor from you?

Do you think the History book from 1997 would be a good start or is there another you'd recommend first?

Wayne; There are 2 books that I use costantly for Noritake. One is "Noritake China; "History of Materials Developement & Chronology of Backstamps" This was put out by Noritake Co. Limited. I do not have the address as I received this through the International Nippon Colletrs Assn. in 1998. The other is a relatively new one, "NORITAKE; Jewel of the Orient" copyright 2001 by Page/Fredriksen Publcations, Greensboro< NC. Can be purchased through Replacements, Ltd. 1089 Knox Rd, Greensboro, NC 27301. 1-800-737-5223. Cost is $29.95 plus shipping. This book has hundreds of china patterns from early 1900's up to 1960. It is divided by 1, shape, 2, then by pattern within the shape. There are 16 plates to a page & over 200 pages of prints. This is a really 1st Quality book.

And I think collectors book was (was) running a special for all three "made in japan books" for 36.00. (thought I remember seeing that - could be wrong but with the discount I believe that is what it came out to.)

Wayne, you seem to have gotten so into made in Japan stuff. The books might be a worthwhile investment (time wise anyway) for you??

Tessa,

I've looked for what you're referring to, but can't seem to locate the book seller you're referencing. Can you make it idiot-proof and tell me where you saw these?

Thanks in advance!

Wayne, To save time and a lot of research when I list nippon like you are showing I simply say "dates back to the late 1800S or very early 1900S. The only Nippon I research are the big very fancy pieces that really jump out at you and say "hey look at me I am different" LOL

Fluffy - I think I remember you mentioning that your kitties eat out of china that you can't sell - and that your guests almost have heart attacks when they see that!

We bought up a couple of sets of china in box lots at an auction and any with chips we put into our "throw away" box. We came up with about 10 saucers with chips (out of a couple hundred pieces total).

We started doing using them with our two right after I saw it mentioned here. I think they appreciate the special treatment and it's a lot nicer than using paper plates.

Bigpeepa - Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still gonna have to get a few more books until I get more experience under my belt to get it within the ballpark. I do have to realize I won't be an expert in it to sell it - just as long as it's not misleading or blatantly wrong. As it's been said here before - list it and the collectors will know what it's worth.

Thanks again to all!

Wayne,
I will try to find the flyer I received in snail mail that had the specials on it. The web address for them is:

www.collectorbooks.com

I believe they are located in Kentucky. I always try to find the books used, but the Made in Japan ones are hard to come by used, and if you check Amazon, even the used ones are arent discounted much and costs about as much as the new ones. (Seems they always know how to slam sellers as buyers..lol)

Thanks again. Just went off and bought 3 including the Noritake: Jewel of the Orient one.

You're right, with all the Japan and Noritake stuff that seems to be available at the estate auctions we attend - this will be a good investment.
