I just went to list some jewelry and I see they removed the Costume Jewelry catagory and put in Fashion Jewelry. What is up with that? So I guess if we are doing contemporary jewelry we list it under Fashion. I hope this is right. I guess when something works eBay changes it...

Costume Jewelry is under Vintage Jewelry.

Thanks for your response but it's not what I want. The old catagory was Costume Jewelry and then you could choose either contempory or Vintage. In the catagory you suggested only was for vintage. I guess I stay with fashion but it doesn't seem right to me.

Things are very confusing now in Jewellery. I think new costume jewellery is supposed to be listed under an "kind of item"-category like necklace or bracelet. I was bidding the other day and found that vintage costume sellers are now listing things in 2 categories--for instance--Vintage Costume Other and maybe Pins.I guess eBay needs to make a bit more money in listing fees. There is no other reason for the terrible new category divisions.

As a buyer it is awful because you don't know where to look!! Vintage or all the other scattered areas. Inthe end I found vintage costume not even listed there under Antique/Vintage--but under Necklaces or Pins or Sets.If I can't find it; I can't bid on it.Scattered categories are too time consuming.

Ebay wanted to do this same kind of thing --list by "item kind" to Vintage Clothing and had a community discussion. Does anyone know what happened?

Thanks!

I just checked the Announcement Board and it looks like they updated more of the categories recently.

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/marketing.shtml

Scroll down to ***Category Updates***
Date: 08/27/03 Time: 11:08:28 AM PDT

The category structure has been updated based on feedback received from the eBay Community and from experts in the affected fields.

Experts?? Do any of these "experts" actually buy and sell on ebay? They have been messing with the jewelry categories for a few years and each time it is more confusing and more of a mess.

Okay I quickly went over and scanned through the jewelry catagories. No where is there a place to list unsigned rhinestone jewelry, In bracelets unless you have a gold or silver the catagory is other, same with Pins necklaces. Oh dear I wonder who they had feed back from, no I am not going to say it but I will write ebay an email. That is if I can find where to do that. They really recked the jewelry catagory...See that's what happens when I don't go over to the eBay boards where the posters talk about families, what they did that day and many goodnights. How did they ever squeeze in jewelry....

I guess you could put it here?

Jewelry & Watches > Vintage, Antique > Costume > Vintage > Rhinestones

I agree that the changes in Jewelry are confusing. Thats all I sell and my sell through rate has gone down. Coincidence. Maybe, Maybe not.

No lie--I think eBay "experts" are people who never sold anything online in their lives. Otherwise why would so many of us have such a negative reaction? I don't think it is a matter of not liking change per se on our part. But, this is like changing a B&M address/location, statistically it has a 30% interruption of sales from browsers. This doesn't affect people who have bookmarked you--just people like me who are just looking through categories.

As a buyer--it stinks. The scattered vintage could be especially seen where you could tell sellers were trying to find where their things would sell--the Vintage area or Mixed listings by kind of item.I usually look at "all sellers auctions" to group buys and this is where I noticed it.

Maybe eBay is trying to copy Yahoo--where the crappy categories also have costume rhinestones listed in Fine jewellery or Costume or Antique.

As a buyer--or seller--this is not better!

WOW that's really a mess - I knew something had change but OH MY GOSH. I'll never know where to put anything now??
Wish they would just split off the antiques and collectibles all together (like ebay motors or something) and let the retailers have the other stuff so we could get back to the business of auctions. I've been wanting to say that for a couple of years?? lol
And why is it that the ebay people don't know that Victorian and Art Deco jewelry is not always costume jewelry?? I have alway hated that and it looks like they still don't plan to change that?

I have felt that way for about 2 years now. Ebay is over doing it when it comes to catagories. They have come way too specific. If a buyer is searching in a catagory, why not have it broad enough for them to see a reasonable variety of items? It is worse in the collectables area then jewelry IMHO. For example if a person is a sports nut and is looking for a bobblehead doll. No specific person, just collecting bobbleheads. They will have to know exactly who the are looking for as they made the catagories team specific. It used to be item specific so you could see a big variety from many teams and players. Now, you will only see that specific item or two and won't see the others. What this does is it can keep someone from seeing other items that they really want, but didn't know it yet. Ebay needs to take a step back and make the catagories a bit more general.

Most of my collectibles buyers aren't using category searches anymore at all. I"ve been doing an informal survey with my buyers, and NO ONE has said he found my item in a category search, since I started my surveying in late spring! Several have commented on how bulky and slow the category searches are, and they just search keywords now.

So--if only we had about 10 more title-line characters to use, we could cover most of the search words, right?!

Did you by any chance ask if they checked the little box for title and description when searching? It makes a bigger area for key words!

I sell across a variety of categories and find trends in different areas from obvious bid due to a key words to people checking costume jewellery listings as they are closing so they can bid, because there are just too many listings to look through..

I tried to think why eBay would even have listings by kind of item in jewellery and all I could come up with is that one of their mega commercial discounters had their stock listed that way and it would be easier for them to upload.

It is most frustrating...beads have been dinked with, and it's just still not very organized.
Duplicates for those who search and overlap for those who sell.

Labelle: No, I did not ask if they'd also checked the little box when searching, but thanks for reminding me! I've now altered my survey to include that question.

I have to agree with ladyjewels' idea of splitting off jewelry to it's own area - a great idea. The categories are confusing to both sellers and buyers. You almost have to search all jewelry and watches to make sure you don't miss good items. I love the idea of reproduction and new jewelry being separated from vintage and antique. I think buyers looking for vintage/antique get burned out plodding through the categories that are overloaded with new stuff. And, as Junebug states, sales have been pretty rotten in the last couple of months. Probably partly due to the time of year, but I think also due to the categories. I'm only listing a couple of auctions here and there right now - too many auctions ending with one bid or no bids. Oh for the good old days!!!

JMHO--eBay turned it's back on the Antiques/Collectibles/Vintage categories years ago.It is still a pieced together site that seems to have random upgrades that aren't better --especially in categories.

I still think Only Vintage is a viable niche area for a site . Nothing will ever be as big as eBay.Nothing needs to be as a niche.
