I am currently looking for the fastest internet speed available for residential. I currently have DSL, but I'm wondering if cable is quicker? Or if there even is another I don't know about that would be faster than cable or DSL?
I've heard of T1 connections, but the way I understand it, that's only for businesses.
If anyone is familiar with this, please let me know.

DSL or Cable really depends on your area. Some areas DSL is faster while others cable is faster. You either need to just try them both out or find someone in your local 'neighborhood' who has that type of connection and ask them.
T1 is faster than both and has a price to match. I think you could get a T1 even if you are not a business but be prepared to pay hundreds to thousands of $ a month.

Cable depends on the carier company. In some areas it is no faster than dialup. In other areas it is as fast as DSL. It also depends on the number of users on at any given time. When a great number of users are on at one time it will slow it down.

My DSL provider has different speeds available.
Maybe yours does too, try a faster speed.

I live in Seattle, so take it for what it is worth.
I remember when they were testing this in 98.
Smoking downloads...smoking video...in fact, the computers were smoking...after they were done! 
Now, the party is over. But, it's still b e t t e r than dsl.
Computer speed can have a lot to do with it, too.
I love it, it's no brainer with my mac and I am too busy with other stuff to be my own personal computer tech.

Best thing to do is check out your neighbors...see what they're using.
I get 1895 kbps via Road Runner but the area we live in is semi rural..density (number of users in the area) affects cable speed while proximity to the DSL node affects that speed.

Cable is effected by the number of users on a node but the cable company monitors the speed and adds new nodes. Cable speeds are not effected by additional computers per home via a router so if you have two or three computers in the home the price seems less because everyone is hooked up at one price.

My cable connection is 2566 Kbps.

My cable speed tested in at 4970.
We have several levels of service and I pay for the fastest.

My DSL is 832kps.
Lindajean, that is an incredible speed! Are you on RoadRunner? Or another service? RR is really the only cable one I have heard of. It does seem that cable is faster.
It may be worth the switch. Anyone here use a T1 at work or anything that can tell us how fast yours is?

This depends. Speakeasy.net has DSL available to 3Mbs, but you must be close enough to the CO to use it. I have them now and I am a long way from the CO so I only have 628kbs.
Cable can do 20Mbs but most cable companies don't let you do that. Some are set as low as 628kbs, most are set around 1.5Mbs. I know that Comcast has an upgraded plan for 3Mbs. Please note that these are all download speeds. If you are listing and have lots of pictures to upload your upload speeds will be much slower than these. If upload is an issue you might look at a different kind of DSL called SDSL which can provide up to 1.5Mbs upload and download, but it is much more expensive than these others.
