I didn't run into this until I moved out in the country but when I go to any local Post Office to mail my E-Bay stuff I get this ..two of three people in the line in front of me wanting the Post Office to fill out all their bills, money orders or checks etc. because they say they can't read or write. And these Post office clerks take up 30 to 40 minutes for each person to do this. Are they doing this everywhere or is my patience running thin. And I thought it was bad when the old ladies wanted to see all the new stamps for the year.

I get a few that need help because this area is rife with english schools attended by Japanese students. Addressing is not a problem but the customs forms are little more than they are ready for sometimes. Them I have patience for, The little old ladies with the stamps or better yet, the people fresh from the mall with a shopping bags and concept that are trying to wrap box and address are the ones that I want to throttle. I now take a book. Next week I start on Patricia Cornwells newest Scarpetta book so they can be as slow as they want : )

I just love the stamp one. I was once in line behind an older woman buying stamps to mail her daughter's wedding invitations. She couldn't make up her mind. They're stamps for goodness sake. Who cares what they look like? When was the last time you paid close attention to the design on a stamp when you received a piece of mail?

I cannot stand it when people, rather than stand to the side to complete forms, have to hold up everyone in line because 9 times out of 10 they are too lazy to do it themselves.

Do you live on NC or SC?? I ran a motel in Raleigh, NC & used to get guests that signed with an X. This was in 1988, at that time at least 25% of NC'n were illeterate. I grew up in IA which had a 99.9% literacy rate. I was astonished. BTW, I graduated from HS in 1947.

It's getting to be that time of year when the gift-wrap-impaired besiege the post offices. You've seen 'em; they crowd up to the counter with a bag full of unwrapped gifts. The clerk has no choice but to assist.

My idea, which I still think is a good one, is for one of those Postal Annex stores to set up a trailer in the PO parking lot. Any postal customer whose items aren't ready to be shipped gets shunted off to the trailer, where they have to pay Postal Annex rates for the extra service they get.

I sympathize with you, though; Christmas only comes once a year. Illiteracy is with us always.

I live in Kentucky,I think if I was still in Florida I wouldn't see that as much,of course in Florida they can't figure out how to vote and they sure can't drive. And before you guys get all over me...I was born in Florida and lived there for 40 years.

Hello, The other side of the coin is I feel bad when I have 15 or 20 boxes to mail people have to wait for me.

I don't--when I (& I'll bet you do this as well) get my packages to the post office, they are sealed, labeled/addressed & everything they need, including customs forms, if needed. All ready to go. And it really doesn't take all that long, even with 10 or 20 packages.

The ones that drive ME crazy, are the dimwits that get to the post office without having whatever they're mailing out boxed, sealed, labeled, etc. They get to the window, have to get their box, tape & what not, take up time getting told how to do it--go to one side & get everything all packed up--then step back to the window in front of other people who are waiting & finally get it all paid out. It can take forever, with some people. I just can't understand people who do this.

at POs with more than one clerk, one should be used for those people who are not quite ready, need package shipped etc. that way one would be available for express and the line could keep moving.

my biggest pet peeve is a company secretary with 20 or more items that are going registered or overnight and none are ready. then the clerk has to go in search of packages for her to pick up! and all the while they are carrying on a conversation about their families, kids, what party they attended!

Amen to all the comments! My pet peeve is the passport dummies who come in with disorganized and incomplete documents. Usually with three or four screaming kids in tow. And then want the clerk to fill the stuff in because their hands are full.

I use Endicia for postage and UPIC for insurance. Just walk to the front of the line and out in under a minute.

We use stamps.com but our post office still makes us stand in the long line to drop off the packages. It's very frustrating!
