My girlfriend and I were talking last night, when in my foggy haze </////~~~ I thought of a way that would guarantee sellers their money, ebay their fees, and newbies to pay for their items each and every time.

Ebay requires us to have a credit card on file to have an account, and most everyone has a Paypal account which of course Ebay owns. I think that Ebay should require newbies (rating of less than 10) to have the money in their Paypal account, and it automatically be deducted if they win the auction.

This would satisfy sellers and Ebay, while helping newbies get use to the idea of paying for their items. I think this is a logical means to satisfy everyone. Newbies really need to be held accountable for making payment, especially when they are the most frequent deadbeats (I would estimate that 40-60% of newbies with under a 5 rating don't bother to pay). I think this requirement can be lifted after their rating has achieved the 5 or 10 status.

Any thoughts... Of course, convincing Ebay to do this is basically asking them to police newbies, something that they probably wouldn't go for, but now that they own Paypal, it seems as though it is a valid possibility.

It may be a great idea, BUT, I don't thinkm it is legal. P/P may be owned by eBay, but it is being run as a separate business. It is in reality a clearing house for credit cards.

Actually, I think it would be completely legal. It would just be a requirement of membership. There is no difference between this and a financial institution. You can't withdraw money from a bank if it's not there, and newbies shouldn't be able to bid unless they have funds in their account. It keeps deadbeats from bidding, pure and simple.

I think at one time ebay seriously considered that format. They were supposedly in talks with nobidding.com in December of 2000 to have an online auction site named AuxPal accept only Paypal payments which would automatically deducted from the buyers PP accounts. Ebay backed out at the last minute for some reason.

Interesting. I know I would be much happier not having to file FVF all the time. I know this wouldn't be foolproof, but at least it would reduce the newbie flakes. I'm really getting sick of losing money because Ebay won't manage them better.

The Auxpal concept was BEFORE eBay purchased PayPal.

What about the deadbeats with 100's if not 1000's of positive feedback? For me, it seems like most of my deadbeats have been on ebay for quite some time.

actually, i didnt think a bank can give your money[except where a crime been committed as in forgeries], LEGALLY, without your permission. an example is that a visa bank just sent thru the clearing house to electronically deduct from my account the check i had sent vendio for the charges accrued during the month...i had previously advised c/card company that i dont allow electronic clearances on my checking account...it was presented, my bank refused; c/card calld me for an explanation; which i certainly gave them...they then sent my check thru clearing house in normal procedure...i dont know what the legal ramifications of your plan would be; it would certainly be interesting to know if ebay would resort to this for us sellers tho. everyone have a good weekend!

by the way: after weeks of no "ebay needs your info, otherwise we going suspend you," emails, i got two last night...JUST WANT TO ALERT EVERYBODY....

I remember when Auxpal said they were going to do it and almost all of the sellers thought it was a very bad idea ( Paypal wasn't as omnipotent as it is now ). It would exclude about 30% of the ebay buyers that refuse to use any electronic payment system.
I can see ebay giving buyers or sellers some kind of a break if they use the Paypal system to encourage more use of the payment system.
